I was talking with a friend of mine today re: her recent RCS and how it all went down and she mentioned that her DS's pediatrician was in the OR for the c/s. I asked her if this was a normal thing and she wasn't sure. Her DS was born at 35weeks 5 days and had some breathing difficulty so I was thinking it could possibly be because of that? When I had my c/s it seems like there were a million people in the room but I don't remember a pedi being one of them. It was all so hectic I could be mistaken. Just wondering if anyone knew if this was normal or not? I love DD's pedi but I don't know how I feel about him seeing me like that. Of corse, it's not the most important thing in the world but it would make me feel a little akward.

Re: pedi in the OR for c/s?
I remember my OB yelling at the nurse to make sure there was a pedi in the room as they were running down the hall with me. She said something to the effect I don't want to hear the pedi is on her way. I want to hear she is in there now. We can't start without her.
It wasn't someone from the pedi practice we go to. It was an on-call dr. Thank god she was there. DS was born not breathing due to cord issues.
I delivered early, and yes, we had a pedi there. He stayed to the side until she baby was born, and immediatly took the baby from the OB.
We did not choose to use or normal pedi practice but a hospital NICU pedi, mostly because they know how to handle just born babies the best.
Both my kids were born full term and there was no pedi present. I'm guessing it's only in cases where a child is born premature or they suspect some potential issue at birth.
Blog a Log
I used the hospital's pedi because the group I used was in a different hospital network from. I delivered LO just hours shy of him hitting the 37 week mark, but my situation was different, since he was frank breech with low fluid (his movement slowed dramatically which was why I had him at that point).
The pedi was in attendance in the OR (I remember because I saw the bill a month later with an OR charge) because I am figuring that they LO may have complications, but he didn't. Small, but scored 9/9 on his APGAR. I am not aware if that is standard practice having a pedi attending a c-section. I would figure that it's based on the circumstances and if is hospital policy.
