Recently DH and I have become Mad Men fanatics, which has been fun (for a number of reasons) especially because all these lovely actresses are making him see "old lady names" in a new light (thank you, January Jones!
).
We really love Trudy.
The downside? As far as I can search/tell, Trudy is only a nickname for Gertrude. And Gertrude is....well, kind of awful. (It even made the "Most Hated Baby Names in America" article: https://www.babynamewizard.com/node/36385). I'm really not one to argue that Gertrude isn't kind of a hard name to get on board with.
I think Trudy works as a standalone name. DH thinks it's a little "cute" for a full name.
So what do you think?
Can Trudy stand alone? Are there any other names it can possibly be a nickname for? Is Gertrude maybe not as terrible as we all think?
I'd love to hear your insights!

Yeah, I generally feel that no one wants to have to live with a name like Gertrude.
Trudy is kind of fun and spunky; old-fashioned, but not currently "used" like Ruby, Tilly, or Millie (all of which I love just as much, but seem to be growing in popularity).
Maybe DH will see it my way the next time we're pregnant.
I do think it can stand alone.
I really, really don't like this name, but I think it's bc we had a very annoying patient for quite some time with the name so my opinion is skewed.

I suspected as much. At least other people think it works on its own!
Seriously. Working in healthcare, education, and childcare can completely ruin a name for you.
I think it can stand alone.
I like it, but it's got a very strong tie to The Facts of Life, for me. #imold
My grandma's name is Gertrude.
She told her children and now us, her grandchildren, that if anyone were to name their children Gertrude she would take them out of the will. And she was NOT kidding. She hates her name! She likes Trudy a little but hates the name Gertrude.
I think Trudy is an adorable name.....I personally don't see it on anyone over the age of 5 really working but it is cute none the less.
It probably can stand alone but for the record, I don't like it.
When I was in high school we had an exchange student from Germany named Ortun (Oar-tune) in choir with us, she went by Trudy.
I totally forgot about The Facts of Life Trudy!
Like I said, we've been all over Mad Men, so when I hear Trudy all I think of is:
That's fascinating to me, because I've only ever heard it on older women (outside Mad Men, which, of course, is set in the 1960's). I can see it sounding "too old," but not really "too young."
Though I do get how it's a little cutesy and you might arrive at that.
This.

Trudy is cute, but Gertrude is not appealing. Unfortunately I don't like Trudy as a stand alone name, it has a slightly juvenile sound with no other formal options.
In my Catholic saints book I found Trudel as a variant of Gertrude which might work for you to get to the nn Trudy.
And wasn't it Tootie on TFoL?
Joan Harris = awesome.
And I don't think I even have to ask how you feel about Donald/Don.
