2nd Trimester

Hyper mobile joints .. anyone else? ( kinda long )

I was just reading online about hypermobile joints and pregnancy, to be honest  I wasn't too worried about it since my doctor told me they would stiffen up to "normal" as I got older.  I was probably about 18 when I was told I had it and now that I am 41 ... they have been a LOT better as the years go by to the point I don't even tell most people I have an issue.  Till now !

Just hit the 21 week mark and the last few days/nights everything is sore/achey ..hips, back, knees, ribs, hands ... you name it lol.  For the last couple of weeks my left knee has been feeling a bit unstable, mostly when using the stairs.  Wearing flat shoes aggravates my joints, so occasional heels are def a plus for me as it realigns everything and improves my posture.

I know  softening of the joints is normal anyway.. but if you have Hypermobile joints does it get a LOT worse .. I read about problems with epidurals and anaesthetics etc and that L&D is usually a lot faster.  I wasn't planning to induce/epidural or elective CS anyway unless it was an absolute medical necessity so a drug free delivery doesn't worry me.

.. but its the premature delivery that concerns me more than the pain.. since I'm already  high risk because of my age.  Also somebody mentioned it can affect the heart too.  I can't remember if I did, or didnt tell my Dr  since it really hasnt been an issue for years.. I'm thinking maybe now I should make sure I tell him.

Anyone have any additional information/advice ?

  • This is my first baby, so I can't really give you any good, useful info.  But I do have some pretty yucky musculoskeletal issues.  According to my rheumatologist, I'm not "double jointed", but rather "loose jointed".  I also have patellar tracking disorder, which means my knee caps try to dig a trench in my femur bones because they don't fit in their tracks right.

Anyway, I normally take a few tramadol or percocet and 16 or 20 ibuprofen pills a day, so adjusting to the un-medicated pain in the beginning of the pregnancy was pretty rough, and now I'm adjusting to the relaxin making my joints loosen up even more.  I'm just trying to take it as it comes, we're 25 weeks now, so I'm basically just starting to get big and have body changes.  I try to ice/heat as much as I can, and use A LOT of pillows at night to keep everything aligned as well as possible.  Good luck to us all with creaky bodies, I guess!

  • I don't have any advice but I can sympathize.  I have a few joints that are hypermobile (but I don't have hypermobility syndrome).  It was so bad a couple of years ago that I was constantly putting my SI joint out of place and suffering from sciatica.  I started investigating treatments because I knew that I would never be able to get through pregnancy with my joints the way they were.  I had prolotherapy done on my SI and ankles and the results were incredible.  I finally started to gain pelvic stability once the ligaments were strengthened through prolotherapy.  I've had some sciatic pain during this pregnancy but it's actually much better than a few years ago.  There are many doctors who do not believe in prolotherapy and many insurance companies don't cover it.  I paid for mine entire out of pocket but it was so worth it for me.  It might be something that you want to look into for after pregnancy.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

I had no idea HMJS had any correlations with pregnancy. I have HMJS and Fibromyalgia and pain meds don't work for me so I'm use to living with the pain. And since we're getting into winter, I figured my new/worse pain was related to the cold.(My Fibromyalgia flares up in the cold). I didn't know it could lead to earlier, quicker labor either. Now I'm doing my research! and I'm definitely going to inform my OB.
