Did you or your dh go to private school?

Like an all girl or all boy HS? I heard a radio ad for McQuaid the other day, all boy private school grades 6-12. I stopped and thought about it, really never had before! I know it is crazy $$$ and not likely an option for us.

What are the benefits to this type of education? It is heavy in religious studies, or is it for any religion?

I am 100% clueless when it comes to this...so please forgive the terms or lack of knowledge! I went to Catholic school for 1/2 of Kindergarten....that is all and there were boys! lol I know a lot of private/catholic school are male/female...so what would be the benefit of having them separate?

Re: Did you or your dh go to private school?

  • I went to CBA (Christian Brothers Academy) in syracuse for high school. It was boys and girls though. I really liked it compared to public school. It was a lot tighter knit and you felt as if your teachers and classmates really cared about you instead of just being a number. I remember when i was a sophomore my horse died and when I came back to school I got lots of hugs and in religion we prayed. But anyways I'm not sure about boys and girls being separate though. I didn't know they still did this! lol!

  • DH went to an all boy Catholic high school. Our kids will NOT. MIL and GMIL really push for it and we will be the 1st in their family not to do it. He graduated in a class of like 40 and I just don't think that there were as many social or academic opportunities for him. Maybe it's just this 1 school but I was shocked at all the things he didn't learn or have the chance to learn. I don't see religion as a necessary subject in school. Oh and we don't have 12k a year for high school tuition.

  • My husband and I both went to private schools for both elementary and high school.  My Catholic School was co-ed and his was all boys.  There was religion involved in that we had religion class and had liturgy once per month or something, but the religious aspect did not permeate into everything.  Now, I currently teach at a public school.  I see the pros and cons to both and am torn as to what I am going to do when my LO gets to be school age!
  • I never did. DH went to a catholic school but it was co-ed.. It was still sooo small though. I definitely don't want my girls in catholic school

  • I went to catholic school pre-k thru 12. Elementary school was co-ed, hs was all-girls. I really loved it and I didn't feel like there was a 24/7 focus on religion, but religion was a required class and we said a prayer every morning. I thought I got a really good education and I was very successful - I took several AP and college courses and was able to graduate college a semester early thanks to all the credits I earned in high school. I was very involved in clubs and extracurriculars, and there were a lot of sports to choose from. One thing I never did was play an instrument - that was not something offered at my schools. I don't think it is a financial commitment we will be able to make for our children as it is very costly but I liked my experiences there.

  • I don't have any personal experience with it.  A neighbor boy growing up went to a private catholic school - Aquinas - but it is both boys and girls.  He went because of hockey though, not religion.

My sister teaches at a public school now, but used to teach at a private (boy and girl) christain elementary school in Schenectady.  My main downside is that private schools pay the teachers less money and have them teaching in classes that in public schools they would not be qualified to.  Also, I believe their testings of the kids is different, not the same bar that public schools are held to.

Now I think that a kid can have a great education in a private school and a sucky one in a public school, but I think that for an average kid with involved parents, public school is going to be perfectly fine education wise and that it can offer more opportunities in extracurricular activities that some private schools can just be too small for.

  • I went to Catholic school k-12.  My dad told my mom he wouldn't take us to CCD so she put us in the Catholic school.  I really liked wearing uniforms.  I don't think the education is any better.

  • our kids will not go to a private school as long as we live in this school district.
  • I went to private school- elementary and high school.  My high school was all girls and Catholic so pretty heavy on the religion- mass pretty regularly plus religion classes and nuns everywhere!!!  :0)  It was nice not having to worry about clothes and boys but I don't think it's a route will will take with Eva.

  • I went to public school but DH went to private school for 9-12. He went to a private Catholic school in southern CA, Mater Dei, but you didn't have to be Catholic to go to it. He liked it and I think that academics were stressed but I also know that football was a HUGE deal there. Like if you didn't go to every game you were completely ostracized. lol

We live in a great school district, so as long as we stay here our girls will go to public school.
