I love a beautiful cake. I know it's ridiculous, but I really think if you have a beautifully done cake, that can be a real focal point for decor at a shower.

DS is having a 1st bday party and is having a Dr. Seuss theme. I see lots of ideas online for Dr. Seuss shower themes too and he is having a very, very cute cake made for him (since I adore cakes and will spend on them).
One of the hostesses for my shower has a side business making cupcakes so she did the cupcakes for my shower. There were four flavors, all with different color icing and a little plastic pacifier on top. It was really well-done and the cupcakes were to-die-for.

Here it is! It was a gingerbread baby theme She had adorable boy/girl cookie sets made for favors!
I always liked the owl theme.
