Sushi Rolls

So, it occurs to me that I could make sushi work.  Tempura-fried anything should be ok, and is the crabmeat in rolls raw?  If not, one could totally do California roll.

RIGHT!?!??

  • The crabmeat is usually pollock and it's cooked.  Most rolls have cooked meat/fish in them and will be okay.  Just avoid any raw items.

  • Yes.  The crab meat is usually cooked.  And MANY rolls have smoked tuna or smoked salmon.  If my Zofran starts working, I want sushi to be meal this weekend.  I haven't had any since July.  ::cries::

  • The risk is tiny tiny tiny it is about 1 in 1-2 million that is not hardly a risk at all considering that the risk of cancer that the PA uses is 1 in 1 million so go eat sushi

I know I'm going to as soon as I can get a reservation and a babysiter on the same night

  • I love sushi so I will not stay away from eel rolls/dragon rolls.  Everything is cooked. Spicy Tuna, on the other hand, will have to take a back seat for awhile.

  • I have been sticking with veggie rolls and stuff like that.  My favorite sushi place has an amazing chicken tempura roll too.  So good!  It may not be as good as real sushi, but it helps with the cravings!

Actually smoked salmon and tuna are on the no no list.  Since they aren't actually cooked in the traditional sense.

I totally agree. Veggie sushi can be incredibly delicious. One of my favorite sushi places has sweet potato sushi rolls that are incredible!  mmmmmm...oh yeah. Now I need to have some this weekend.

Yep. I was going to say this. I'm super disappointed to miss my FIL's gravlax (cured, but not smoked) at Christmas this year!

  • I've been trying to convince my husband that california rolls are okay, because of the imitation crab, etc, but he brought up a good point - the california rolls are made on the same surface as the raw stuff, and therefore contamination could make it so that the risk with the cali rolls is just as much as with the raw stuff.

Although, I agree with a pp that the risk with sushi in general is low.

Yeah, I was pondering that myself.  I guess I've never sat at the sushi bar and watched them to know whether they clean between the two types.

  • I have gotten sushi a couple times since finding out I was pregnant.  My sushi place has an Easter roll, which is like a Philadelphia roll with crab meat instead of the smoked salmon.  I also had an avocado, cucumber, asparagus roll.  And also a Crunchy roll, which is like a spicy tuna or salmon roll but with crab meat instead.  They were all delicious.  Although I did feel like the staff thought I was afraid of real sushi :)

  • I haven't had any sushi yet but there will be some carefully planned meals in my future, as soon as this g**dmn morning sickness is gone!  I'm not worried about "cross contamination" from raw fish getting into my non-raw choices... and I have to wonder, what do pregnant women in Japan do?  I know they don't sit around eating sushi all day anyways, but still.  There are lots of potential hazards lurking all around us, I'm proceeding with caution but not crazy.  Bon Appetite!

They eat sushi and don't have the conniption fits about it American women do.  Ultimately, everyone has to decide what she is personally comfortable with.  I am comfortable eating uncooked rolls from a reputable sushi restaurant.

  • the thing about sushi to keep in mind is, the potential parasites will make you sick, but they won't directly affect the baby like listeria can .Sure, it's not great if you're sick while pregnant, and if you do get sick you have to make sure you're eating/drinking/etc., but the risk is different. While i don't eat the raw stuff, I don't worry about "contamination" from raw stuff while eating at reputable sushi places that have never given me or anyone else I know a problem.

This, I ate (no lie) sushi nearly every single week of my last pregnancy. I had salmon or tuna rolls. If you are going to a place that you have never been sick from before why on earth would you cut out such a great source of omega 3s from your diet? I understand people wanting to be safe but you don't have to forgo the sushi, eat what you like its good, its healthy, and it's delicious!

  • Also, you can make your own sushi (veggies and cooked foods). It's actually really simple (though until I got the hang of it,the rolls looked like little nori burritos, but still tasty). Get the nori, rice wine vinegar, wasabi, etc. at an Asian grocer as it is much cheaper than the grocery stores.
