Stroller Frame vs. Travel System.

Hey Ladies,

Me and my husband have been researching strollers and can not decide if the stroller frame or travel system is the best way to go.  I like the features of the travel system; the obvious being the car seat, the under carriage basket, canopy and cup holders.  But I have heard that some are hard to manuever and have a short life span.

I like the stroller frames also but they seem to lack a lot of features that the travel system has or you have to pay extra for the attachements.  Would love to get your opinions on what you prefer.  Also if you can recommend brands or models I would really appreciate.

Thanks Ladies.

 Big Smile

Re: Stroller Frame vs. Travel System.

  • I opted for the stroller frame. I just thought that the travel systems were too bulky and I didn't really want the stroller that came with the travel system anyways. I wanted to get the city mini stroller so I got that and then bought the snap n' go frame.

  • I'm not sure what features the travel system has that the stroller frame doesnt besides the ability to carry a 2 year old.  My frame holds a car seat, has a basket, cup holders, and the seat has a canopy.

It is just less bulky (good) and I will have to buy a new stoller once the baby outgrows the car seat (bad).

  • We're getting the Britax B-Safe infant car seat & the Britax B-Agile stroller. They're sold separately but will function as a travel system too.

I would recommend going to the store & trying out different brands/models to see what is comfortable for you. BabiesRUS & Buy Buy Baby usually have quite a few on display that you can test.

  • I believe the car seat or bassinet is good until 6 months. Than you need the toddler stroller attachment that lasts up to 50 pounds.  When you buy the stroller frame it seems that they come with a bassinet and infant stroller attachments but you have to purchase a seperate infant car seat.

  • You can use the car seat attachment as long as your baby fits in your infant seat. Bassinet until they can sit up.

I have the I'Coo Targo and am very happy with it. It doesn't have a cup holder so I bought a velcro one for like $5 on Amazon. Actually, I bought 2 and use the other one for my cell phone.  It looks like a snap n go when you use the car seat attachment. It comes with the car seat attachment, front or parent facing seat (this was a must for me and limited my selection), and bassinet.

The seat has alot of great features including full recline, and it raises up and down so it can be table height or lower for a toddler to climb in and out.

  • I HAAAATE travel systems...and didn't learn my lesson until LO#2 was several months old.  Its one of those...if I knew then what I know now...I would have gotten a used snap and go and purchased a really nice stroller that can grow with our family...like a BJCS or Orbit.

  • We bought a gracco travel system.  I really liked it.  It fit his infant seat, and then it fit him when he outgrew his seat.  I don't find it that bulky.  It manuvered fine.  We also use soft carriers, so buying an expensive stroller wasn't even a thought.

I also like my Graco Quattro Tour travel system. Works well for us and looks great too.

  • I went with the stroller frame.

I really liked the look of travel systems; how you get the cute print all over and the cupholder etc etc, and I also liked that I wouldn't have to buy a whole new stroller when LO outgrows the carseat... buuuut I am very petite and although I could manuever the travel system around the store just fine, when I folded it up it was just too heavy and bulky for me to lift. I won't always have hubby right there with me to fold and load up the travel system into the trunk for me! So I went with the stroller frame as it is more lightweight and is something I am confident that I will be able to wrangle when it's just me and LO out and about :)

  • It doesn't make any sense that they call it a "travel system" when all of them are so heavy and bulky... :-

It looks like whatever you get, the baby will outgrow everything...I was going to get the Chicco frame and an infant car seat to start since it's lightweight..but I can't buy anything to adapt to the frame after the baby's > 35 lbs...

It would be great if there was a travel system that was actually lightweight and not bulky...and that would be < $500...Orbit, Uppababy, 4Moms are all tooooo $$$$...I think...

    Decisions, decisions...oh dear.

  • We have an Orbit Baby travel system but it's basically the stroller frame and it can attach to the infant carseat, toddler carseat, bassinet and stroller seat. And it is super compact when folded...we loveeeee it. Also no exra attachments, just a stroller frame and then whatever seating options you choose.

Not a travel system but the Baby Jogger City Mini can be used with an infant carseat if you buy the adaptor. Once the baby has head/neck strength and can sit in the seat, you can put the baby in the seat and recline it. It's pretty lightweight for a stroller (16ish pounds, I think) and has a one-hand fold that is ridiculously easy. it fold in half so it's not bulky when folded at all. It's also significantly cheaper than Orbit, Uppababy Vista, etc.

We got this set too. We love it. Our local baby store carries them as a set, which is cheaper than buying separately.

Amazon carries the set for about $300, and Target carries the set (they call it the travel system) for about $350.

It has a basket for storage, folds with one hand, and is super light weight. It's easy to push, and it doesn't have a bar at the back that you would kick when you walk, if you are tall.

I recommend watching videos of it, it's really great!

Like I said in my previous post, check out the Britax B-agile with the B-safe car seat.

  • I had both when DS was a baby- a Graco Quattro travel system & a Snugride stroller frame. I ended up hating the quattro, it was bulky & heavy, pushed terribly outdoors and was a pain to put in the car. I got a jogging stroller for walks & used the stroller frame for errands. I've had a ton of strollers since then and the City mini is one of my favorites. If you just want one stroller, I'd just get something like that & buy the carseat adapter for it. So many strollers have carseat adapters these days, even some umbrellas, you can make your own travel system and bypass the need to buy multiple ones that will work for both the infant & toddler stages.
