How do you know?

How do you know when your LO is done nursing?  I'm sure this sounds silly and has probably been asked a million times, but I really have no idea,

LO is almost 8 weeks and she still takes about 45 min for a nursing session.  I've seen other moms at group who feed in like 10 minutes and their babies are gaining like crazy while mine is not.

DH thinks she is comfort nursing, but I honestly can't tell when she goes from eating to comforting and I don't want to take away any food from her because she needs all she can get!

The only time I can see or hear her swallow are for a couple seconds at the start of a let down.

Any advice?

TIA!

Re: How do you know?

  • If I had time, I just let him suck as long as he wanted. If I didn't (if we were out, or if it was during the day and I needed to do something), then I'd cut him off after ~ 20 minutes. I nurse on demand, so if he got hungry again, I'd feed him again.

There's nothing wrong with letting her comfort nurse when you can. It's good for your supply.

Babies tend to get faster with age - now I know when he's done because he comes off the boob and starts looking around.

  • At that point I could tell he was comfort nursing when he'd stop nursing and then start again when moved.  He'd never unlatch himself but he'd fall asleep and then if I'd move he'd suck again for 30 seconds and then stop.  Agree with pp, nothing wrong with comfort nursing if you have the time because it is great for your supply.  If I didn't have time I'd slip a paci in right as I unlatched and that usually worked.  How old are the babies at group?  LO will definitely get more efficient with age.  I had a friend who had a newborn when DS was 9 months.  We started nursing at the same time and DS was done and playing way before her LO was done.

  • If your baby is swallowing then she is nursing.  If she's hanging out and not making any gulping noises or you can't see her throat moving...then she is comfort nursing and using your breast as a pacifier.  45 minutes is too long IMO so I think there's some comfort nursing going on.
