getting LO to stop cursing

So DD has recently decided to start saying "shoot" all.the.time.  I realize in the grand scheme of things it isn't the worst thing that could come out of her mouth but her intonation is spot on and I would really like to start figuring out how to best curb this habit.

No one in the house is saying it (anymore) except her.  Do I ignore it and hope that it will go away?  Tell her that it isn't nice and to stop saying it?

Re: getting LO to stop cursing

  •  A while back the boys started saying, "Oh my GOD!"  We were shocked.  I think they must have picked it up at school because we're pretty careful about what we say in front of them (usually).  We started correcting them with, "Oh my goodness!" and it worked like a charm.  Maybe you can correct her with a better alternative like "oh no!" or something like that.

  • I'd intentionally drop stuff / make mistakes and choose intentional words I want her to use like "Ahhhhhh man" or "whoops". She will start copying you in no time.
  • I realize this is going to sound super silly.  But, I've started saying "Aw, crum" instead of shoot/crap/crud etc.  And, if DS is around I make a silly joke out of it, because then I'll say, "Aw, crumbly-wumbly!"  And DS will giggle and giggle, and copy me and it becomes a little game.  If DS said something like "Shoot" or "crap" (which he has said before!), I'd just say, "don't you mean 'Aw crum!  Awww, crumbly-wumbly!!"  and then we'd start giggling.  So re-directing, without really making a big deal out it like of "GASP!  We don't say that word!!!!"

     That's all I got.

  • Ditto the others.  Start using a replacement word a LOT and she'll start copying that instead.

  • I don't have any knowledge or advice but just thought I'd point out "shoot" is a lot better than the sh word I imagine my kids will pick up.  Stick out tongue

I'm actually pretty impressed that she latched on to shoot instead of the plethora of other words that spew from my mouth.  I'm thanking my lucky stars on that one.  Smile

    PS - how are you?

up and down... trending more towards the up than the down.  Feel a little bit stronger every day. Thanks for checking in.  And making me giggle by imagining your adorable little lady bug with those cute dimples going around saying "shoot" all the time.
