Sleeping with pillow and blanket?

DD is 22 months old and she still doesnt sleep with a pillow or a blanket. It's just her alone in her crib. I am starting to think I'm nuts and paranoid and she is not going to die from SIDS at this age because she has a blanket. She slept with a sleep sack up until a few months ago, when she just all of sudden didn't like it anymore. She sleeps pretty good, but I wonder if it's time to give her a pillow and a blanket. What is the best ones? A big pillow or a little pillow? A thin blanket or a fluffy big blanket?

It still makes me nervouse, am I a total loon?

Re: Sleeping with pillow and blanket?

  • I added a blanket at 1 and a pillow on the night of her 2nd birthday.  She throws the pillow out of her bed every night.  She wants nothing to do with that thing.

I would add it and see if she likes it!  She will be fine - I promise!

My boys have been using pillows since last December / January when they had bad, bad, bad, colds... I propped them up with pillows under their fitted sheet... But after their colds where over with I tried to take the pillows out and they didn't want them out!!  So till they were 9 months old I put the pillow under the fitted sheet and then after that I just put the pillow in the crib with them on top of the sheet.  And blankets have been in there since there were 7/8 months...or so... I also used crib bumpers too!!

So yes I think by age 2 she could have a standard pillow and blanket...

  • I added a small toddler size pillow (came with a toddler bed-sized comforter), around 18 or 19 months.

added a blanket around 20 months - just a small light one.

  • OP- I could have written your post. No blanket or pillows here yet either. Just last week she started insisting on sleeping with her baby Elmo. And occasionally she will throw her tiny pillow into her crib and want to sleep with it, but I usually take it out once she's asleep. She still likes her sleep sacks, but I only use them when it's cold. Oh and... I'm still using her Angel Care monitor every time she's sleeping. Going to need the monitor very soon for Lo#2, but I'm considering just buying another one. I'm convincing myself it'll be useful when we switch to a toddler be so I'll know if she got out of bed and is roaming the house. Breaking me of the Sids/Angel Care worry might be harder than giving up paci's and potty training.

  • If you're a loon then I am as well (which, I guess, could be possible).  My daughter didn't sleep with a blanket and pillow until she was in her big girl bed which was when she was 26 months old.  Before that, I was a little paranoid and then it probably just became habit but once she got into a 'real' bed, it felt odd to not have a blanket and pillow on it.  When I did get her a blanket it was a full on duvet and the pillow was regular size but not a super big fat fluffy one (although the choice here had nothing to do with SIDS, I don't find fat fluffy pillows comfortable).  Before she had a blanket, in the winter, she wore footed fleece pjs so those kept her warm (plus she runs warm all the time anyway) since she didn't have a blanket.

  • DS loves his quilt in his crib (my grandma made it and its super fluffly and light weight)...I've been thinking about adding a pillow soon because he likes to lay on ours now when he's in bed with us, but he tosses and turns so much, I'd be surprised if his head was ever actually on it :)
  • I was the total loon too :) We didn't give Elizabeth a blanket until she turned 2 because up until then, she loved her toddler sleep sacks (the kind with the feet holes). But like your DD, she decided overnight that she hated them.

Now she loves her blanket and has to be covered up just right when we put her to bed. I tried giving her a toddler pillow at 2 too, but so far, she doesn't like it. She'll play with it and lay on it, but every night before she falls asleep, she tosses it out of her bed.

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • We started using a blanket at 18 months when it got colder. He also was sleeping with a lovie and 2 small stuffed animals. He got a pillow pet for his 2nd b-day and now uses that as well.

  • I was paranoid about it too...we just added a pillow and blanket about a month or so ago.

We ordered a toddler pillow from Amazon, and she sleeps with an afghan that my Grandmother made for her (actually she sleeps with two pillows, her afghan, her Tickle Me Elmo and a stuffed rabbit from Build a Bear, lol).

  • No pillow or blanket til right before he turned 2.  Not that it matters though since he kicks the blanket off and uses the pillow for his feet, not his head (silly boy).
