2nd Trimester

Question for a friend..

A friend of mine had a miscarriage about 3 weeks ago. They said the baby probably passed around 10 weeks pregnant. She went in to get her HCG levels tested and they're at 1,898. Is that normal or should she be worried?

Re: Question for a friend..

  • Her HCG levels are still going to be up for awhile. As time goes on they should gradually decrease. (Her doctor should continue to monitor that to make sure they are going down.)

  • Exactly as PP poster said, sometime if there is some tissue left in the uterus as well, it can cause HCG numbers to be high. Make sure she stays in contact with her OB, and best wishes to here healing. That is a hard place to be in. The ladies at on MC/PL are great if she's looking for some support.

  • They will be up for awhile until the hormone leaves her body. I had miscarried my first at 7 weeks and it took 4 weeks before it was out of my system. Since she was further along, it would make sense that it take longer.

Her doctor should be having her blood drawn once a week until they are <5 just to make sure her body is regulating itself.

  • HCG levels will stay up for a while and vary from person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy. Doctor may test her until she's back to zero to be sure she passed all of the tissue.  If he's sure she did, he'll probably not worry about it. On the good side, my doctor allowed me to TTC after one regular cycle.  Miscarried in April, now 19 weeks pregnant!
