2nd Trimester

DIY nursery ideas

I love DIY projects, as I am an artist. I love the website pinterest, as well as martha stewart, and a few other sites/blogs.

So far, I will be painting a sky mural over the crib. SO and I are also working on an origami mobile, but we aren't sure of what creatures to use...I was thinking butterflies and birds, I have at least 3 butterfly patterns and 6 different birds. Even with the butterflies I figure this would be a nice gender neutral addition, and it makes my SO feel like he is included. (It will be safely secured to the ceiling, I do not want a mobile attached to the crib for fear that it might harm Baby.)

Otherwise I am making a coat/towel hanger from doorknobs and a spare piece of wood. Some blankets to crochet for friends but I won't have time to do my own, so MIL and GIL (grandma-in-law) have it covered. I also found a cute "announcement" cross stitch, with a sleeping baby and toys, with a flowery/green border and an empty space for Baby's name and birth date. I will be attatching this with fabric onto an album after Baby arrives.

Who else has any projects/ideas? I don't mind if anyone uses my ideas, and I am curious to see if I can learn anything from you ladies.  =)

Re: DIY nursery ideas

  • I love DIY projects as well!

I just finished the argyle wall in the nursery.

The next project is addressing the attic-access cabinet door thing. We plan on turning the into a built-in shelf unit that can slide in and out as needed.

I love this!! We really wanted to try this for our LO's room (boy or girl). You did a great job.

  • I drew some animals using the crib bedding set for inspiration and bought an enlarger to project the drawings on the nursery wall, which I then painted all around the room - much nicer than the wallpaper print (and easier to get rid of when it's time to repaint the room).  I also made a photo board (the kind with criss-crossed ribbon holding the pictures in place) and I tucked two dried roses from my bridal bouquet in the ribbon.

I crocheted one blanket and I'm starting another soon.  I'll also do a cross stitch birth announcement.  DH is going to make a bookcase for the nursery - we've already started building our library of baby/children's books!

  • I'm going to make a crib skirt, curtains, night light (porcelain figurine with a light inside), all artwork, mobile, baby book... At least that's the plan, lol.

  • We are going to make our nursery a barnyard and my SIL found a site that tells you how to iron on fabric to the walls.  It's super easy and peels off when you want to change it.  I also sew and will be making some baby clothes too.

  • My project list is a mile and a half long! My MIL, mom, and myself made DD nursery bedding and change pad cover, quilt, etc. She will soon be moving to a big girl bed, but I'm still so in love with the material that we used (and her room) that I bought more to do pillow cases for her big girl bed. So, I have that on top of the new baby bedding. For our baby boy, our bedding and such will be from Dan Stiles marine line fabric. I had to really scrape to get it all ordering from 3 different places, one being australia!

Good luck with your projects! So much fun to see everyone's ideas!

  • mac&chip, that argyle wall is fantastic!  I've got a similar one pinned on my nursery inspiration board.

We're big DIY'ers so I'll probably be making a bunch of things.  Art, knitting a blanket, maybe making a footstool/poof, some sort of mobile.  I'm loving Pinterest for the inspiration!

  • The mere thought of the work that went into that argyle wall!  My goodness you're ambitious!!

We don't have a "theme" for our nursery, just a colour scheme, so I'm planning on making crib skirts, crib sheets and change pad covers in coordinating fabrics.  Bought all the fabrics and started on the sheets this week.  Then realized that I need 48" of width for the crib sheets and all the fabric I bought is 42" wide.  Duh!!

I also plan on making a paper mobile.  Still debating on pinwheels, or lanterns, maybe I'll expore the origami animal route after reading this post...

    May make some artwork too.
