D.C. Area Babies

if your DCP provides the option to provide lunch for your LO

how much per day is it?

our DCP provides 2 snacks but breakfast and lunch is our responsibility. They just sent an email stating they are looking into providing lunch for $3.30/meal.

If you have this option, how much do you pay?

Right now, DD gets Eden pasta (it's whole grain and organic and is often with kamut, quinoa and veggies but looks like pasta), corn-and-peas and chicken nuggets. The whole thing probably costs $1-$1.50 per lunch, but it is time consuming and a chore.

  • For us it is included in tuition so I don't pay separately.  That said, I would assess the quality of what they are offering before you commit.  At DDs school, at least once or twice a week I send an alternate lunch because it is something she doesn't care for or I would prefer her to not eat.

  • I think our DC charges around $60/month extra for lunch, which comes out to approximately $3/day if you figure 20 weekdays in a month.

I haven't taken a very close look at it though, because the food they provide is really geared toward kids over 2.

Yes, definitely find out exactly what they'll be serving. When we shopped around for daycares, a lot of the places that bragged about their state-approved lunch program were really feeding (IMHO) some pretty crappy meals. Like, Ketchup is a Vegetable kind of meals.

  • That's what we pay for the girls to have lunch at their preschool - comes to about  $66/mo. for 20 lunches (per kid.)

I don't know, their menu looks great to me - sometimes I feel like they eat healthier meals at school than at home.  Embarrassed  The school uses some service... maybe ask to see sample menus before you decide?

  • DD goes to an in-home and it's included in the price. When we made the switch to the new daycare, I didn't realize how much having meals provided made life *so much* easier. I don't miss the days of washing all of that tupperwear, making sure I'm stocked with lunch items, packing the lunch every night, etc. So, depending on your budget and what they serve, I would definitely consider it as it really does cut something significant off your daily "to do" list.

Same here. It's included in our weekly fee. In fact, I've stopped looking at the menu b/c I trust our DCP, and it's so much easier for me to not have to prepare two breakfasts and two lunches everyday. Not sure how much I'd be willing to pay, but definitely think about how much easier it would make your life not to have to do that.

  • Just to compare prices, LCPS charges $3 a day for school lunches and those are lunches for elementary aged kids so they eat more than little ones do.

  • Lunch is included in our cost.  We do have the option of adding breakfast, and I think it's about $30/month.  But I'm not positive.

We've had the same situation, first with DD#1 an in-home, then in all day preschool where all meals were provided and now with DD#2 in an in-home day care.  DD#1 is now in kindergarten and I LIVE for Thursdays--the one day that hot lunches are available at school.  Making lunch is a PITA.

Your school only offers lunch to kids one day a week? Is that common? I assumed public schools offered lunch every day starting in kindergarten.
