What makes you a "bad" parent?

Re: What makes you a "bad" parent?

    I have several.

    * DS eats dinner in front of Sesame most nights.  I find he eats better that way.

    * I still rock him to sleep for naps

    * Sometimes I give him Play-Doh to play with in his highchair so I can get the dishes or another chore done.

I am sure I could think of more if I really thought about it.

Whats wrong w/ playdoh in his high chair? And whats wrong w/ giving pacifier at bed? Man I didn't even know those were bad. I must be really screwing up! I'm w/ you on the TV w/ dinner.

    1.  We took them to a pro-pot legalization gathering.

    2.  We took them to occupy Seattle.

    3.  We haven't really baby proofed our living room, so the girls have bruises all over from where they fall into things.

    4.  We don't always put them in their high chairs when we give them their meals.  We sometimes "free feed" which means DH or I will sit on the couch and let the girls wander around, stop and get some food, wander around more, eat something, play with toys, eat something, etc.

i had no idea that had a name... i just thought i was a mom failure those nights!

Hahahahaha!  That's just what I call it.  It's a term that I heard on the Pets board once when you leave cat food out all day for the cats instead of just putting the bowl down at meal times.

Oh you know I'm raising DD as a cat, so I often do this.

  • - My kid eats nuggets and french fries on the regular..but she also eats a ton of fruits and veggies, so I feel like it evens out.

    - We keep her out late some nights, like when we go out to dinner with family.

    - I let her go pretty much anywhere in the house besides the bathroom and kitchen, and more than once, I have found her under our bed, playing with DH's socks.

  • We start our day with the news which is actually the Today show.  Then the channel is switched to Sprout where it stays for a while.

Abby still has a pacifier and I have no plans on changing that anytime soon.

I get so bored with playing games, princesses, shopping, kitchen that I will sometimes give Olivia my phone or computer to play games.

I feed Olivia the few things she likes and will eat.  If she tries something I've cooked great.  If not, I really don't care.  She's not going to eat macaroni with butter forever.

  • Yup, definitely have tv on all day here, too. Really just for background noise. Start with the Today show (which she loves.....loves to clap with all the people on the plaza, haha!), then Food Network the rest of the day.

I have also turned down the monitor in the middle of the night when she fussed, and accidentally fell back asleep. woke up feeling so bad Sad

I am a huge Howard Stern Fan, and I still listen to it on Sirius radio when I am in the car with her......she is 16 mos old.Embarrassed But, in my defense (really?, I am pathertic, huh?), I have the rear speakers off, so it only plays in the front of the car, and I keep it pretty low. But, I seriously need to cut that out soon or she is going to come out with some crazy derogatory word.

  • The other night Dh and I got into a fight and he had to get up early and since I didn't I refused to leave the room and let him sleep until he apologized, Dante woke up and someone had to put him back to sleep so I brought him in the bedroom with me because he is teething and the tylenol hadn't kicked in yet and I knew he would be loud. I was very upbeat and cheery the whole time. I felt like it was okay because in the end he snuggled up with H which he never does and H got this look of awe on his face that made me tear up, and he apologized.

If I feel sick, or like today hungover, and DS can't entertain himself I turn Blues Clues on and play on the computer or lay down until he starts turning the tv off and I have to get up and parent. Sometimes it's not a kids show and simply something I want to watch. My son knows how to turn on the TV and the Xbox (what we watch netflix on), and the first time he did it I taped it and called it a milestone.

I put chocolate syrup in his milk if he is being fussy because he is hungry and I haven't finished his meal yet, he drinks all of it and I have time to finish cooking.

I do my best to child proof and there isn't a single room that is off limits, so far he is still alive but I have caught him splashing in the toilet a few times. H feels that eventually he will figure out how to lift the lid so there's no point in remembering to put it down.

H turns it down all the time in his sleep too and I feel awful when I wake up 2 hours after his usual wake up time and he is asleep still. I feel like maybe just this once he actually slept in about 2 hours later, and not that we slept through it.

  • We watch TV in the background when were playing sometimes.

She still uses her paci and I have no plans to take that away from her.

We took R to the pumpkin patch this weekend, and I forgot shoes or socks for him.  He was all over the place in bare feet.
. I was so shocked when I first read this... Until I saw where you lived:) This weekend it was down in the 40s so DS was all bundled up, I couldn't imagine no socks or shoes, but only bc of how cold it was where we live. If it was nice- let him go barefoot!!!

  • We go out to dinner every Friday night at 7:30pm!  We don't even leave the restaurant until 9pm and he doesn't get to bed on Fridays until at least 10pm!

  • We let him watch more tv than we ever thought we would.  We live in a small apartment and sometimes it the only thing that calms him down.  Still I'm an educator and I feel awful about it.

We turned his carseat around before we wanted to.  He throws up when its rear facing and it scares me to not be able to see him, so I was distracted while he was rear facing.  He stopped throwing up when we turned him around, but we still worry about him riding that way.

I buy Asher too many toys.  I think its because I had nothing when I was little, but I'm working on reining myself in.  All his clothes don't need to come from gymboree and Osh Kosh...I'm working on it.

  • --DS is on OUR schedule. So he goes to bed around 11:30pm and wakes up at 10:30-11am.
--I think he's eaten more junk food in the past 10 weeks then I have in my lifetime. I've been so exhausted with this pregnancy I've cooked maybe twice a week. (Pizza, ravioli's, spaghetti, McDonalds
--The first thing we do when we get up is turn on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and watch tv for an hour...then eat breakfast
--We "free feed" (as a PP called it) constantly, unless he is eating a snack and I need to get a chore done.
--l play Elmo songs on you tube if he's having a temper tantrum and want it stopped quickly.
--When no other method of discipline will work, we give him a swat on the butt.

ETA: We also still put him to bed with milk (although the bottle stopped at 15 months)--now it's a sippy (as if that's better). But, he does stay awake the entire time he drinks it then will talk and fall asleep...
--We turned his carseat around at 14 months..
--He has more toys then probably 10 kids combined (we usually buy him a toy each time we go to Walmart/Target)

  • Tegan won't drink plain whole cow's milk and she's a little bitty thing, so I put a tablespoon of Nesquik powder in her milk, so that she'll drink it. She gets 1-2 sippies of chocolate milk a day, sometimes the second cup will come from a fast food place, if we're running errands.

Tegan gets a package of fruit snacks every day on the way home from daycare, sometimes she gets a package on the way to daycare in the morning as well.

Tegan eats a Gerber Pasta Pick Up almost every day for lunch. Sometimes, she has a Gerber Pasta Pick Up for lunch and Kraft Mac N Cheese for dinner. She also hasn't eaten more than 10 full servings of vegetables since she started refusing purees at 13 months. I still offer them, at least once a day, but she never eats more than 2 bites and that's on a good day.

I turned her car seat around for a 10 hour car ride when she was 21 months old... we never turned it back around and I'm ok with that.

My 8 and 10 year old nieces came to live with us, about 2 months ago and since then, Tegan has been given way more candy than an under 2 year old probably needs to have been exposed to. They've gotten better about not sharing with Tegan, but she's really good at convincing them otherwise, lol!

We've used spanking in certain situations, although it doesn't happen often and a variety of other methods are tried before she gets a spanking.

If Tegan would eat a McDonald's Happy Meal... I'd happily buy her one if we happened to be out around a meal time.

Gabe gets fruit snacks too. And by ravioli's I did mean the Pasta Pick Up's. Most of the time, that's the only thing I can get him to eat too.

  • We let LO watch "Play with me Sesame" or a movie in the morning.

She also has not been weaned from her bottle.

  • LO still has a paci and when we are out in public we sometimes use it to keep him quiet.

LO eats Gerber Lil Crunchies every day because it is currently an allergy safe food.  If he hears the can shake or sees it he starts freaking out.  We call it baby crack.  He also gets Ians chicken nuggets a lot.

We have the tv on in the background in the morning and in the evening.  I figure he is TV free while he is at daycare.

Yep, it was 80 degrees.  We were sweating.  I'm going to have a problem when it gets colder with remembering shoes or socks :(
