T+P for grandfather (and the family) please.

Background - grandfather has had failing health for a while now. Strokes and Alzhiemer's. In August, he was so bad that his wife (my step-grandmother) had to put him into a nursing home.

A month later he broke his hip - and refused physical therapy. My dad went down to motivate him and had him doing therapy, but while my dad was down there my grandfather spiked a fever and turned out to have an infection.

They thought they had gotten it under control.

This weekend he spiked a 106 degree fever and for some reason cannot treat the infection. From my understanding, it would be because treating it would irreparably damage his system. They are treating the symptoms and keeping him hydrated, but his prognosis isn't good.

All I can think of is that if he does pass, I will not be able to go to the funeral and be there for my dad. Family reunions won't be the same without grandpa playing euchre and beating everyone else all the time at it. I just - man.

This sucks.

Kurokai - I'm so very sorry you're going through this. My grandfather passed away last week, and I felt very isolated being stuck in California while my family was first caring for him, and then mourning him in Texas. I know my family understood that I couldn't be there, but I felt awful for not being there for such a significant time. There was just no way it was responsible for me to go.

I hope your grandfather pulls through so you can introduce your son to him! You and your grandfather will be in my thoughts.

My grandmother passed last December of complications from a long hard battle with Alzheimers. I miss her everyday. I sincerely hope that your grandfather stays around and hope you are able to take advantage of the time he has while he is (if he is still) lucid and he is able to meet your son. Everyday he remembers your name is a gift and wish I had known that before... I will be thinking of you and your family.
