Gender Neutral items

My DH and I have decided to wait until D-day to find out what we are having. I'm trying to look for clothes and things to start buying so that we don't have to go out and shop for everything all at once. My question is.. Anyone else have a hard time finding things for both boy and girl? I found a two pack of sleepers that had one green sleeper and one yellow and honestly that's it? Also, are any other moms waiting to find out until the big day? What are u doing about a 'coming home' outfit? Buying one outfit for a girl and one for a boy and just returning the one you don't use?? This is our 4th so I'm pretty positive we won't have a shower. Just trying to get ahead of the game!

  • I have no problem dressing a girl in some 'boy' clothes so I count those as GN.
  • Most of the "neutral" things we bought were labeled as boy items because they had greens and oranges. Anything labeled as girl had pink and purple thrown up all over it.

Heads up: most of our neutral clothes for Norah had ducks on them. That's about all there is out there.

  • Buy cute green and yellow things with animal pictures on them. There are a lot of gender neutral clothes that are labeled for either boys or girls because they have blue or pink on them. For instance, all the shirts below are advertised as boys clothes but they would be cute on girls, too. They just aren't "girl colors".

  • My SIL was team green and she had a "coming home" outfit for each.  They were at MIL's house and once my niece was born, MIL cut the tags off the girl one, washed it and brought it to the hospital when they were visiting.  Then SIL returned the boy one.  She didn't buy much in terms of clothing until after my niece was born because she had a hard time finding a lot of cute neutral stuff.  She got a lot of clothing as gifts after my niece was born and saved some of the gift cards they got as shower gifts to buy clothes.

I agree with the PPs that you may have better luck shopping in the boys section.  I have some clothes from DS that were definitely labeled boy but will be fine for a girl, but there are very few items where the reverse is true - the majority of girls clothing seems to be pink and purple, covered in glitter, hearts and flowers.

  • As for going home outfit, I will be packing four outfits.
  • Every once and a while Zulily will have a GN shop. We did greens, yellows, some blues, reds, orange. Like PPs have said, I also checked out the girls and boys stuff for things that would work for either. For take home outfit, we had a Baltimore Raven's sleeper. It would have been used for either girl or boy.

  • We were team green last time and are going to be again. I found some gender neutral, yellows and greens at tjmaxx, marshalls, carters, and bought a boy outfit and a girl outfit for going home clothes. We had every friend and relative bring clothes galore to the hospital and the house once they knew we had a boy. We also had a gift card to Carter's and DH went and bought boy sleepers once we were home. I found that we used mostly onesies, gowns, swaddles, and sleepers for the first while anyhow which gave us entry of time to get boy clothes together.

  • I know they change their styles and lines a lot, but a friend who was team green last spring found a lot of cute stuff at Baby Gap- lots of gray, tans, and whites, very cute sleepers and onesies.

  • My husband and I are finding out the sex of the baby, but we're still going gender neutral. I agree with those that said it's easier to shop in the boy's section and find things that way. Also, I've picked up quite a few gender neutral items from Zulily.

?  Nope, we were/are TG and have tons of sex/gender neutral clothes.  Ducks, frogs, monkeys, trains, sports, puppies.

ETA: bought most of our stuff at resale shops, Target, Walmart since babies go through clothes so quickly and pee/poop/spit up on them so stains are expected.  DS came home in a duck outfit with our alumni booties/hat.

  • We aren't finding out either. I have found a lot at consignment shops. Definitely more in the boys section. I so happy I'm not the only one waiting! As for going home I haven't decided. Either neutral or one of each then just pass on the unused outfit.
  • Yes, we have never waited to find out before so this is super exciting for me! Thanks everyone for the tips! I will be checking out zulily for sure!
  • We are team green this time. With our DD we knew she was a girl and got so many clothes. She only wore onesies and sleepers in the newborn size. A friend of mine just gave me neutral sleepers she used for her twins. We have a ton of girl clothes already but nothing long sleeve. I found a pack of super cute neutral long sleeve onesies from carters. I got those and 2 pairs of boy pants and 2 pairs of girl pants. We will get a going home outfit for each gender along with an Infantbeenie for each gender. Whichever we don't use we are donating to the NICU. I figure I will just order clothes online once we find out the gender to fill in gaps. We are good for the first few days though.

  • It's all sleepers, but this Zulily shop has tons of cute things that could be used for either.

@stephanie2378, I wouldn't put that on the baby in the car seat. You shouldn't have anything that thick under the straps. You won't be able to get them tight enough to be safe. Coats or anything fluffy like that can compress in a car crash and allow there to be enough room between baby and the straps, for the baby to be thrown from the car seat.   Thankfully I wasn't on the call, but I have seen the pictures of a crash in my county where this happened. The parents were in shock because no one ever told them not to put anything more than a light jacket between the baby and the carseat or the straps.

  • We got a lot of gender neutral outfits at our shower with our first. It was nice! We got greens, yellows, greys, reds. My husband picked a girl and boy outfit and we kept the tags on. We didn't use the boy so he returned it after. I originally wanted him to pick one after but he didn't want to have to leave us while in the hospital.

  • @Stephanie2378‌, it loks thicker in the picture. I also wanted to make sure to post for other ladies on the board who might not know that information. Sorry if you thought I was putting you down or anything like that.

  • Gymboree has a lot of grey items and cute things. I just ordered a few things during a sale and got great deals. I was at H&M yesterday and they had a few things.I have a hard time finding gender neutral clothes that are cute so anytime I find something I usually buy it. I have been able to find a couple of really cute things but much. I used to feel guilty for buying clothes so early but with how expensive baby clothes can be if I find something cute and it's a steal I snatch it up

  • When it gets closer we will buy a few outfits if each. Then return what we don't need. I really want to start now but want to be within the return policy range.
  • Target has some super cute grey and cream stuff out right now :) DH came home with 3 fuzzy newborn pjs today.

  • Before we knew the sex I had been picking up some gender neutral onesies here and there and I found that baby gap probably had the most to offer gender neutral-wise I'd come across thus far. It's a bit on the spendy side though.

  • We're team green also, and have found to look around at all places.  We've had the best luck for GN at Farm & Fleet.  Never thought a farm store would be our best bet.  But we're only stocking up on GN things like onsies (mostly white), sleepers, sleep sacks (cold winters), swaddles, and a few pants with neutral tops or designed onsies.

As for a going home outfit, we're planning to pick something neutral that all of our kids can come home from the hospital in.  Whether it's a boy or girl.

Also, be sure to check out the boys section.  They seem to have a lot more options in regards to some neutral colors.

  • I didn't even know going home outfits are a thing. Are these, like, fancy outfits, or just a onesie you pick out ahead of time? Does the hospital provide simple clothes for baby the same way you can use their diapers and receiving blanket and hat?

  • @wintersong139‌ it can be a big thing. DS went home in a Dr's outfit. I thought it would be funny and it was adorable. The going home outfit can be whatever you want but the hospital does provide simple, white onesies, a hat and a blanket that you keep.
