Croup

While we were in Disney, SIL took her kids to immediate care because they were up all night coughing with fevers. They were diagnosed with "respiratory viruses". Now (of freakin' course) my Nattie was up with a cough all night. It's definitely a weird cough, when people say it's like a barking dog- holy crap it's exactly like that. My good friend google has me 99% sure she has croup. My sis (who is a nurse at a Peds office) says there's nothing the Dr can do- to just run a cool mist and get them lots of rest for a few days. I'd like to avoid packing up 3 to go to the germ infested peds office but don't want to risk anything...

If your LO has had something similar do you call the Dr?

Re: Croup

  • We did take Gavin to the doctor when he had croup.  His cough was so bad it was like he was gasping for air and was freaking us out.  A lot of people say to sit in bathroom with hot water running to let them breath in the steam, but that made Gavin worse.  We spent a lot of time outside in the middle of the night (in Roc in January!) or sitting by the open window.  The doc gave him a steroid which helped a lot.

  • I'm the same way... I avoid the peds office as much as possible when E is sick w/ just a virus type thing. DH's aunt is a nurse in a peds office (plus was a NICU nurse for almost 20 years) so we always call her first!

Croup sounds scary though.... if she doesn't seem too bad, I would keep her home and do the cool air. If she isn't better in a day or 2 (or sounds worse) I would take her in. I have heard some LO's need a steroid w/ croup... but Nat might be too young?

  • DS had croup.  We ended up taking him in the first time because he has a problem with his trachea and they generally want to see him with any upper airway issue.  They diagnosed it as croup.  They told us to do the humidifier, steamy bathrooms, etc.  After a few days he seemed to be getting worse so we went back and they put him on a steroid nebulizer treatment.  If Natalie has no other issues I'd probably wait it out a few days before taking her.
  • I personally would call the doctor, mainly because Ian's had issues with sinus infections and respiratory infections in the last year or so. You can probably do all the standard things for croup (keep her hydrated, sit in a hot steamy bathroom for 20 min or so, then take her into a cooler place, run the humidifier in her room), and if you don't see any real improvement, then you can take her in. Sometimes it gets bad enough that they may need prednizone to cut down the inflammation.

Hope she's feeling better soon, and that J and B don't end up with it.

  • Ditto everyone else - they may do steroids, but in the meantime it is just the humidifier and steam you do at home.  I hope B is able to avoid it and N gets better soon.
  • I would probably try a few things at home too. The cool mist is what I've heard too for croup! You can also try a little baby vicks rubbed onto the souls of her feet at night (put socks on after you rub it on). As weird as that may sound it was recommended to us by friends in the medical profession and the times we've tried it when she's been really congested it worked wonders. If she doesn't seem to be getting better in a day or so or something changes like her fever spikes I would take her in, especially being how young she is. A call to your Ped's office never hurts either. I know for our office they won't let you even schedule a sick visit without first talking with a nurse and many times they'll say don't bring her in try A, B, & C first.

  • I would at least talk to a nurse about it on the phone.  They can offer suggestions and also any signs that would indicate you should come in.  Poor little girl!
  • Both C and E had croup a few weeks ago.  I took C into the peds when she had the barking cough and they diagnosed her as having it.  I took E in preventatively later that day and he did not have it then but they gave me tips on what to do if he got it...as everyone said - humidifier, cool outside air.  We also took them both into steamy bathrooms.  He did end up getting it. The worst of it passed us in about 24 hours.

Good luck.  It's super scary when they are so little.

  • We took DD to the docs when she had it-they gave her a steroid in office that was a one-dose thing. She ended up having a double ear infection as well (no signs of that!) so she was on amoxicillin for that as well.
  • Dylan had croup.  We did take him in.  They gave him a steroid and then we had to do the nebulizer treatments.  That was fun :o(  I hope your LO feels better soon.  I would probably call just to see what they say.  However, I agree with all the suggestions you were given.

  • Evan had croup....it got really bad, after we thought it was just a cold for a day or 2.  We took him to the doctor and she gave his a steroid injection and his breathing got so much better.  We also tried the cool air, etc, but the steroid was def. what helped the most.  Hope she feels better!
