2nd Trimester

Cramps=constipation (I hope so) ?

Before going forward - I did call my on call doc today, and she said she doesn't think I'm having contractions...

Anyways, the cramps are now keeping me awake. It started out as sort of a dull muscle pain on my right side earlier today and then it went more into my abdominal area, sometimes it feels like a pain right on my pubic bone. The best way I can describe it is like really horrible gas pains with also muscle pain - achy, crampy all the time, with sharp twinges coming and going - I wouldn't say it's not similar to a menstrual cramp, too, but really constipation is a bit closer.

Sorry it's really hard to put my finger on it!

Meanwhile, the baby is moving and stuff.

My bowel movements haven't been ideal, but they've been okay and I was able to go a lot earlier in evening - but obviously it didn't relieve the pain.

Anyways I ate some more prunes, took some colace, and am now drinking water. I can't feel my stomach tightening with my fingers, but obviously when the cramp is stronger, it has a tightening feeling internally (as any cramp would, really).

Could this be constipation? I don't have any risk factors for pre-term labor, and with the doctor not telling me to go to the ER - it's just a little confusing.

Just wondered if anyone experienced this before... or has any advice... I'll call doctor again if this doesn't go away, but your advice in the meantime would be lovely.

  • If it's on your right side, that sounds kind of like your appendix - I would go get it checked out, especially if it doesn't get better!

Agreed. I've suffered miserably from severe constipation almost since day 1 of my pregnancy.  I've experienced PLENTY of terrible constipation pains and sometimes they literally knock me on my ass and I have to stay in bed most the day.  But in my experience the pains have ALWAYS been on the left side.  Sometimes they are really sharp pains, sometimes they are exactly what you're describing, almost menstrual-like.  But always on the left side. However - your bowels do run from the right side of your stomach, up and across and then down the left side... so I suppose it could be constipation.  But I'd still get it checked out!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • I will say that I've had really annoying pains this pregnancy due to gas/constipation. I started taking colace at night, and the gas pains went away-- but it was bad for awhile and felt kind of like contractions (but it was at the top of my belly). Around your pelvis sounds like round ligament pain, could it be that? Like a horrible stretching/pulling sensation? The appendix thing may be it, but I assume you'd be in a LOT of pain if this was the case. Have any of these things helped?

-drinking 11-12 glasses of water (more than you think you need)

    -a warm bath

-Take an old sock, fill it with rice, and heat it up for 2 minutes in the microwave. Lay it on wherever you're having the cramps for 15 minutes

If not, I'd probably call your doctor back tomorrow. I'm personally not one to ever rush to the ER, so you have to figure out what's best for you!

  • I would keep an eye on how often it is happening and if these don't let up soon, call the doctor again tomorrow.  I had cramping that I was convinced was constipation with my first baby and it was preterm labor.  Just make sure you stay on top of things.  Hopefully it is nothing.

  • Hey guys, thanks!

I'm going into doc today - on call docs said ER trip probably wasn't necessary but recommended a same day appointment today.

I'm guessing I'm just having bizarro RLP pain. Essentially, during the day, it feels more like a clear "stich in the right side" that is manageable, but sometimes painful that sort of gets worse as day goes on/progresses to abdomen.

But it's at NIGHTTIME that it's horrible, almost like a different pain! Essentially, I can't lay on my side or even a little bit back. Have to try to sit up straight and fall asleep like that. Took some tylenol and got some decent sleep thanks to that, but without it, it's impossible to sleep well, if a tall. And the pain at night due to these positions (or whatever) turns more into like BAD menstrual cramps with sharp pains, coming and going constantly! Like definitely would scare any pregnant mom, haha. But then during the day when I'm sitting totally up straight or walking, it's more manageable and more like a constant soreness with just the random bad cramp.

Anyways, I'm getting checked out today and will let you ladies know how it goes. I'm guessing it's just a weird pulled muscle or RLP that just gets real aggravated in certain positions.
