Watching breathing motions of the baby?

I keep seeing repetitive up and down motions on my belly that go on for several minutes at a time... I know that babies practice breathing motions in the womb - I've seen it on my u/s before with this baby and with my girls.  I THINK that's what I'm seeing from the outside now.  I think it happens too long and at too precise an interval to be anything else... Anyone seeing this with their LO?  FWIW, my baby is measuring 41.5w, so he's a biggie and I know he's running out of room so maybe that's his little back being squished up against me that I see moving... :)

  • You know, I see the same thing happening with my belly. Like you, I assumed it was LO practicing his breathing. I intended to ask my doctor at my last visit, but forgot (pregancy brain gets me at least once a day). I'm curious if anyone on the board knows for sure.

  • That's what it has to be...our little one has had it's back up against my right side for a few weeks now, and even my husband will say, "oh, I see practice breathing!". It so reassuring to see our baby getting ready for the big day :)

  • Yep, that's exactly what it is. I asked my OB this at my last appt and she said it was the baby practice breathing. I usually have pregnant brain as well but I made sure not to forget to ask (I put a reminder in my phone that pops up when I'm at my appts) that question as I was a bit concerned. So happy our LO's are doing what they need to do to get ready for the outside world. Such a blessing!

  • I've been wondering the same thing! I know it isn't hiccups and my LO has had his back pressed against the right side of my tummy, just below my ribs, for weeks now and that's exactly where I see it. I'm glad to hear you guys think it's breathing, I was thinking maybe something was wrong.
  • Yes, I've been seeing it too!

  • I've been noticing this a lot the last week or so.  OB confirmed that it was the baby practicing using his lungs.  So neat to watch and feel!

  • It might be hiccups.  I have been having regular u/s and each week they check for practice breathing but I can't feel it when it's happening.  The hiccups though sound a lot like what you've been feeling.  Either way, isn't it so much fun to try and guess what they're doing in there?!?!
