Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Rice Cereal

When do I start giving this to my LO?  She's 3 months and 2 days old; I just went up to the next size nipple in her bottle for formula (otherwise I nurse her after work through to the next morning -- not producing enough to leave with the sitter).  I know I'm rambling, but I want to make sure she's well fed and was wondering if I should introduce cereal.

Side note, my supply started to decrease after taking the mini-pill.  I rarely have to wear my nursing pads anymore. :(   I feel like this part of the bonding experience may soon be coming to an end. :(

Solids are recommended at 6 months (some people say 4-6 months, but aap now recommends 6 months).

I also wanted to say that just because you aren't leaking doesn't mean you aren't making enough milk.  Your body regulates between 2-3 months.

  • Additionally, the rice cereal is not for nutrition, it's for practice at solid foods. It doesn't provide anything better or more for your child than BM or formula.

  • I agree with both PP's. Talk to your pedi. We started at 4months at our pedi's recommendation. 3mo is way too early IMO.

  • Wait on rice cereal.  I know it is exciting to start feeding your baby solid foods, but going from FF/BF poopy diapers to solid food poopy diapers is not an experience I am looking forward to.  I am waiting until 6 months - even through my Dr. Said I could start at 4 months

    This!

Unless your LO is acting hungry, I don't see any need to introduce solids that early.

  • I just wanted to pop in and say I had the same experience with the mini pill. I went from producing 6 ounces to less than 1 both sides combined. To bring it back up I had to pump every two hours. It took about two weeks to be back to normal . Luckily I had a supply built up in the freezer...
  • LO will be three months this week. I have never leaked a single drop of BM. Lack of leaking does not mean you are drying up.
  • Thank you ALL for the feedback.  I will totally wait on the cereal.  As for the mini pill, I'll try to start expressing more to bring my supply back up.  Thank you!

  • Usually the recommendation is 4-6months, so you should be fine for a while yet.
