2nd Trimester

scared of the sleepless nights

I think I have hit that point in pregnancy where you just can't get a good nights sleep.  Everything hurts, I toss and turn (I have a pregnancy pillow that helps a ton), I'm congested and get up a few times at night to pee.  The last 2 nights have been awful and I don't think it is going to get any better.   Everyone says it is to prepare you for the sleepless nights that follow once LO is here.

I am so grumpy and out of it when I don't get enough sleep, How the heck am I going to do this.   Ahhhhh!

  • I am thinking the same exact thing!  I don't know HOW  I'm going to do it!  I am a grumpy b*tch when I don't get enough sleep!  :-/

  • It helped me to stretch my hips before bed and I took a hot shower every night too.  It made me a lot less sore and I slept better.

It will be tough when LO gets here but you'll be fine.  It's amazing how little sleep you can get by on.

  • At this point in time I'm doing okay with regards to sleep.  I mean, I still get up to pee and am also heavily congested.  That said, I try as much as I can to get a nap in on the weekends or week-nights to keep me from being a grump.  I don't know how I'll do it when the baby arrives and you can't nap when you want.  It'll sure be an adjustment, but if everyone can do it, you can too.  Your body will adjust and you'll find a rhythm that works for you!
  • Oh i'm there right now! I was just mentioning something about it to my DH. I woke up last night 3 times to go pee and on top of that I tossed and turned all night. My hand has been going to sleep every night lately, It wakes me up, but last night was so much worse I had shooting pain in my wrist and up my fingers so I tried laying on my left side and I had shooting pain in my left hip. I could not get comfortable for anything. But it will not be this way for long! Soon we'll be having sleepless nights waking up tending to our little bundles of joy! Just a way to get us prepared for what's to come :)

  • I've always been a woman who loves her sleep! Not enough sleep or not very good sleep = raunchy, grouchy and MEAN all day long. lol.  Now I'm adjusting to missing out on some of it because I've had lots of back pain through out the whole pregnancy and about a month ago my hips started aching.  The congestion is a beast.  But I keep thinking about my son and how I can't wait for him to get here.  I know it's going to be far from easy, but it's definitely going to be worth it when I get to see him every day!

You got this, Mamma! Remember, it's our instincts to be mommys! You'll figure it out. :)

  • I also love my sleep. I haven't been in any pain, but I wake up several times and night. I am most concerned about how I am going to go without much sleep when I go back to work after the LO is born. I teach kindergarten and that alone takes a lot of energy. I don't know what I am going to do if the baby is still getting up several times a night (LO will only be 5 months when I go back). That is a scary thought!

Totally agree. You just try not to think about it and do what needs to be done. Looking back on DD's first year it seems insane to me we did that, but as we were living through it it was just our normal.

I feel so much better already.

  • for me, having the baby out has always been easier than in - energy wise.  I'm a super tired PG lady, but have more energy after giving birth.  It helps to go to bed super early and have YH cover the first shift so you can get a solid chunk of uninterrupted sleep too.

  • When I was pg with DS I went through this around the same time but then started sleeping again a week or so later.  I bet you will start sleeping better soon, then the "preparing you for baby" insomnia will begin around 38 weeks.  At least this is how it was for myself and the other mothers I talk to.

  • It's not all that bad-the first week after the baby is born you're obsessed with them and running on adrenaline.  You barely notice the sleep deprivation.  After that I had 5 weeks of "hard time" and then LO started sleeping 10 hours a night for us at 6 weeks.  So really it's only a little over a month of sleepless nights (if you're lucky-some babies take much longer) for a lifetime of having your precious LO.  It's so worth it!

  • I also started to have a lot of trouble sleeping at night.  I can fall asleep but wake up frequently to pee, get something to eat/drink, aches and pains, etc.  I feel like I'm starting to lose my mind.  I loooove my sleep like the other moms to be mentioned.  I told someone today how I'm not sleeping well and she said "enjoy any sleep while you can now", what part of that sounded like I am enjoying anything!!! I understand what she means and it was a lighthearted comment but not a good thing to say to a tired, cranky, hormonal woman.

Thank you to the other comments about how it's just preparing you.  Much better way to put it!
