Anyone planning on getting a "desginer" hosptial gown?

I'm just curious.  I found a pattern online to make my own.  I can sew and I was thinking that I might be more comfortable in something that's familiar and smells like home.

I'm planning on making a couple for my FIL for Christmas.  He has several health issues and is usually hospitalized a couple times a year.  He gets cold easily so I'm going to make his out of flannel w/ fishing prints on them.

  • They have some really cute ones out there, but I just can't bring myself to buy them. If you could make them that'd be awesome. And I think your fil would love a warmer one! That's a great idea!
  • I wouldn't spend the time or the money on one.  I bled all over my 1st hospital gown and spent the two days at the hospital constantly pulling it down to breastfeed so it didn't really matter to me.

  • I don't want to buy a designer one but I want to buy a cheap nightgown that buttons down in front.  i've really been having a hard time finding one though.  I'm afraid of hospitals and I really really hate that they make you wear those gowns that are open in the back.  What if I want to walk around? I want to maintain my modesty doing so.  Those gowns just look so uncomfortable.  Also, the nurse at the hospital where I'm delivering and who teaches the childbirth class we attend was making fun of some women who apparently still have their underwear on when she needs to go check their cervix.  I would like to wear mine till I get to more active labor.  It's just a way to make yourself feel comfortable in an unfamiliar and scary environment.
  • Funny you mentioned this, I had happened to come across this site a couple weeks back and though it was ridiculous!

No, I won't be getting one of those but I did have a cheapy black cotton nightgown thing that I got at Target and used in the hospital. I didn't use it until the day after I gave birth because like the others said, things can get a little messy at first.

  • I purchased my hospital gown Tuesday. I saw the hospital gowns (after my hospital tour) and Im glad I ordered a different one! Stick out tongue

The only stipulations that the hospital had was that the gown has openings in the "proper places" Stick out tongue

It should be here tomorrow FX!

  • Honestly, I bled on the nightgowns they gave me for the first day and a half.  I would be upset if I bled on something I'd spent time making.  The last thing I want to do is trying to soak my gown in cold water in the sink while recovering from childbirth trying to 'save' the gown.

  • No I won't. Some hospitals only let you wear theirs anyway. Hate to make or spend money on one and you not be able to use it.

I've seen several sites selling the gowns and they're all $70+, that's why I'm thinking about making my own.  It would only cost me about $20 for materials (or I could use material I already have in my stash) and then maybe an hour of sewing.
