Teething or something else (long)?

Sorry, I will try and condense this as much as possible.

Last night DH and I tried to go over and spend the evening with our friends. I nursed my daughter briefly before we left, and then she fussed for a little while before falling asleep on the car ride over. When we arrived their dog barked loudly when we walked in and woke her up. My daughter was okay until my friend tried to hold her; then she began to bawl. :-(

I tried nursing, shushing, rocking, patting her back, etc. and even had my husband try to help calm her down, but nothing seemed to work for longer than a minute or two. I assumed it could be due to the fact that she was in a new place, so we went home early, but even when we got home it took 2 more hours of trying before she finally went to sleep.

Tonight we had the same thing start to happen and the only thing that finally worked was driving around. I've noticed that she started to cry harder when I laid her down, and she was less fussy when she was in her seat or being held upright.

Supposedly she is teething, though no teeth are cutting through yet, but I feel like something else could be bothering her. I'm wondering if this could be something else other than teething? Possibly reflux? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Re: Teething or something else (long)?

  • I've had similar experiences. I have a really calm baby that hardly ever cries, but once in a while she gets sooo upset and screams her head off. I associate it would tummy troubles. She usually passes gas quite a bit towards the end of these episodes.

She is on Enfamil A.R. and I won't switch b/c it's better to have gas once in a while from it, than to have silent reflux.

  • Could be reflux if she's okay being upright but it seems odd that it would only come up recently? Could it be an ear infection or something? Maybe the laying down causes pressure in the ears?

I never thought of that. Would an ear infection only bother her at night? She's okay during the day, but for some reason this is the second night in a row that she has initially fought going to sleep.

FWIW she has always been a great sleeper. She is not STTN, but it was always easy to get her to sleep. She just woke up a few minutes ago, nursed, and went right back to sleep as usual. I'm confused. :-/

  • Sounds like teething to me. It starts a long time before you see a tooth cut. DS has two teeth now, he has been teething since about 3 months, and finally cut the two within the last week or so. Have you started LO on solids? Changed anything drastic in your diet? If not, its unlikely he would randomly develop reflux. I know what has helped for me in the past, was laying down with him to nurse when he seems to be hurting, and he goes to sleep.

  • My LO does this when she has a red bum.  Usually at night (b/c more diaper changes in the day irritate it) and when she is laying down b/c there is no pressure against her diaper (like from someone holding her or the strap in the seat, etc.).  A litlle smear of bum cream and she is good.

  • Could she be overtired? We have had to up DD's bedtime alot.  She now goes into her crib by 6 pm the latest or else she is a mess!  She also just got over an ear infection where it hurt her to be flat on her back but that was all day, not just at night.  I am leaning towards being overtired.

She isn't on solids yet and my diet has not changed at all.

Also, as I stated above, she fussed more when I laid her down to nurse.

That's what I was thinking it could be. The first night she was woken up from a short nap, but yesterday she took her regular afternoon/evening naps. She usually puts herself to sleep around 8:30, so I will try upping her bedtime routine an hour and see if that helps! Smile

We're dealing with the same thing right now.  I was talking to my SIL and she immediately thought ear infection- her LO (8mths old) was doing the same thing and it ended up being an ear infection.  Our LO has been congested lately, so we went to the pedi and everything was fine.

He slept better last night, but when he did wake up there was a lot more screaming :(

I'm tossing it up to teething also.  Who knows?

Yeah, I am thinking of just tossing this in the "just a phase" category and waiting it out lol. We have an appointment tomorrow with the pediatrician just in case she's sick. Hang in there! Sad

She was fussy this morning, same as last night, and has refused to nurse OR take a bottle... so she hasn't eaten since about 7 to 7:30ish this morning. I had to wear her and walk to the grocery to get her to fall asleep.
