Breech, head down, transverse, weight...

How do you ladies find all this stuff out? Sounds like you are still getting ultra sounds? I asked my doc at my last appointment when I would get another u/s to check all that stuff out and he said I dont get one(last one was 20ish weeks). He said that when I get closer he will be able to, internally, feel how the baby is sitting. I guess I should have asked how much closure do I have to be. BC what if I go into labor and baby is breech; I assume we do an emergency c-section but idk. If you are getting u/s is it bc your high risk or is your doc just cool and you're getting extra u/s? And if you arent getting u/s how are you figuring that information out?

Thanks!

Re: Breech, head down, transverse, weight...

  • I'm not sure what the norm is for my practice.  I just know I'm getting them because I have GD and it's important to know the size of the baby once you get toward the end.  I've only had 1 since my 20wk and I'll get another one when I'm 36/37 weeks.

FWIW, my OB knew the baby was head down just by feeling my stomach.  She could even tell me where his legs and butt probably were.  We did the ultrasound 2 weeks later and she was right.

  • I haven't had an u/s since 20weeks, but know that baby is head down.

Most OBs can tell you the position and an estimated size just by feeling your uterus from the outside. Every appointment I go to, she shows me where is head, back, butt and legs are just by feel. The weight estimate isn't accurate, but she tells me she's been close in the past.

  • I had an extra u/s to gauge size because of GD. Baby is already measuring big, about two weeks ahead, so I'll have another at 36 weeks. My doc has never tried to tell me what position baby is in, but I've never asked.

  • I do get a growth u/s this week to find out size. However my doctor will not tell me the position the baby is in until 36 weeks or later, and she said she can tell from feeling my stomach at that point. She said, until then there is no point because the baby can still move around. Last time I was there the baby was kicking and she confirmed where I feel the "kicks" is the feet, however since she told me that those kicks have been all over my belly so I know my baby is an acrobat! Right now it is transverse, but it was breech yesterday and head down last night.

  • I'm considered high risk and have been getting monthly u/s with MFM, our next one (and last, I'm assuming) is this Thursday.

I believe doctors can to some degree figure out how the baby is positioned and the size of the baby just by feeling your stomach, not sure how they can do it though :)

  • I have weekly ultrasounds die to low Papp A. I think it's normal tho to not have one after 20 weeks if you and baby are healthy. When they start doing your internal checks they will be able to tell you more.

  • I actually asked my dr about baby's position at my appt yesterday.  She did it based on feel and said that LO was head down.  She said a certain spot where LO was felt "soft like a butt and not hard like a head" but she didn't go into it much further than that because LO still has room to flip and stuff.

I haven't had any u/s since 20 weeks and probably won't unless my dr requests one.

  • I am high risk with GD but I knew that DJ had turned and was heads down based on where he was kicking.  At my last growth scan they confirmed what I and the doctor already knew.  I get growth scans every 4 weeks until he is here.  My SIL who was not high risk still had a growth scan around 34/35 weeks to determine the baby's size and whether or not she could deliver him.

  • I haven't had an u/s since 20 weeks and I know where the baby is based on feel. Every appt my midwife presses and feels my belly to see where he is. It wasn't until this past week that she could feel his head though. We know he's head down but he's still sort of sideways. I'm really hoping he'll turn to rear facing before he comes. DS came out sideways and the pain was terrible. I also don't think I would have torn had he not come out facing the side.

You'll be fine waiting a few more weeks there is still plenty of time for the baby to turn if its breech.

  • My ob ordered growth scans every 4 weeks starting at 28 weeks since I have asthma and that can affect baby growth (but mine is well controlled so there are no problems). We've had 2 so far. Baby has been head down since at least 28 weeks (I asked).

  • When I was in labor with Cam my doctor brought a portable ultrasound machine into my hospital room to check and make sure she was still breech. If there was any question that's what they would do but most likely they can tell if the head is at the opening when you're dilated. She just didn't want to check me manually because they were still trying to stop labor and she didn't want to risk breaking my water or anything.

  • At my 31 week appointment my doctor told me that LO was breech - she was able to tell just by feeling my stomach. At yesterday's appt my doctor was out, but I met with a nurse practitioner. Haha, as soon as I lifted up my shirt so she could measure there was a bulge by my belly button. The NP just laughed and said "How the heck is this baby lying?" I have NO clue - she moves constantly.

She said something about the doctor checking her position around 35/36 weeks, but I don't know if she meant with a U/S or just by feel. It would be awesome to see little bean again since the last time we "saw" her was our A/S, but not enough to request a U/S or pay for a 3D4D.

Neither has made any mention of weight or size, but seem happy with all the measurements they have taken.

  • I get ultrasounds at every appointment because my Dr builds them into the standard appt (and we aren't charged for it).  I am also followed pretty closely due to complications with this pregnancy and previous pregnancies.

BUT, I can feel this kid's but right under my ribs and can often see the shape of it on my stomach so I have been able to tell he is head down for quite some time without ultrasound.  We knew he was long for this same reason, his head is reeeeeaaaaallly low and his butt doesn't move from the very top of my uterus.  Everything else we know by u/s only, although weight is not accurate, really, via u/s.

Yeah I was kinda hoping for one to see the little bean again too! And I agree I dont wanna pay for the elective ultra sound. Just because there is so much to still buy for this little baby. Plus being team green now that the baby is bigger I dont want to chance seeing something I "shouldnt" or dont wanna see.

Thanks again ladies for your input!

  • My midwife can feel how the baby is sitting. I had our elective 3D ultrasound the other day and she confirmed what my midwife had predicted. Baby is definitely head down and ready to go. I really want to know how much she weighs but I can only go by what the reading material says is normal.

  • With my son...one u/s at 18'ish weeks...that's it....

This time I've had four already and at my 32week appointment they said they were going to need an u/s to check the baby's position and to check fluid at 35/36 weeks. I thought it was bizarre to have so many and now another one is scheduled. They haven't mentioned that I'm "high risk", so I assume I'm not. I dunno!

  • Tricare (military insurance) only pays for two ultrasounds ... the second one being at 20 weeks ...

HOWEVER, we had an additional one at 30 weeks because the heart chambers were unclear at the 20 week scan and they wanted better pictures of the outflow track specifically ... at this 30 week ultrasound the tech noted that she was breech

This week at my appointment (33 weeks) ... it was unclear whether she was breech still just by feeling but it was very obvious to my OB that she was transverse ... She could feel some limbs and I am all belly and petite ...

She noted at my next appointment in 2 weeks they would do another ultrasound to check position so we could explore our options (ECV or CSection or both)

She noted that while YES babies CAN move right up until the second before delivery it was unlikely in my case because she hasnt changed position basically EVER ...

  • My OB assesses how the baby is lying at my regular appointments- no u/s, just by feeling. Last time LO was transverse, so it was apparent even to me and DH. She said that if LO hasn't turned by my 36 week appointment then we'll start talking c/s, but not to worry until then.

  • I'm getting ultrasounds to watch a cyst on my left ovary and to make sure it doesn't inhibit LO's growth. Which its hasn't, my little girl is about 4lbs 3oz as of last monday (32 weeks)

  • Regarding position, I can tell which way she's facing and my OB confirmed it at my appt last week by feeling for her through my belly - that's the most common way that OBs will do it, just by poking at your belly.

I actually do get an u/s at my next appt, it's standard practice at my office - it's to check size, fluid levels, and position.

  • I haven't had an ultrasound since my 19 week A/S (aside from the elective 3D ultrasound last week that lasted all of 5 minutes because she wouldn't cooperate). At my appts, my midwife can feel the baby externally and we know she is head down (she's been head down this whole pregnancy), but as far as weight, I have never been told an approximate weight. It makes me jealous that women on here know actual numbers, regardless of accuracy.

  • My last u/s was my a/s at 22 weeks, which is my last u/s unless there is a medical need. At my 26 week appt my midwife could easily tell that the baby was head down and "locked" in my pelvis. It's also pretty obvious that the baby is facing my back.

With my first we could tell the same thing at my 24 week appt, and the baby was low and locked then too-though not as low as this baby.

  • My last ultrasound was a 3D that I paid for at 27 weeks.  At my last OB checkup when my Dr. was measuring my uterus, she said it felt like LO was head down.
