16 Weeks Pregnant

Just hearing the heartbeat at Week 16?? FALSE

Why did the editors post this "fact"?:
Now, she's about 4.6 inches long and weighs about 3.5 ounces, and she's big enough that your doctor may be able to hear her heartbeat.
We all know that you can hear the heartbeat by around week 12. That was 4 weeks ago! Sometimes this site is off on their information. So annoying.

  • I was 13-14 weeks both times before they could hear anything on the doppler.  In the UK they won't even try to hear it on the doppler before 16 weeks.

  • My Midwife heard it on the doppler at 12 weeks.  I have a doppler at home and have been hearing it since then!

  • I was able to hear the heartbeat at my 9 week ultrasound...?
  • Errr...just because you all heard your baby's heartbeat before 16 weeks doesn't mean that EVERYONE can hear their baby's heartbeat before then, too. It depends on the position of the baby, the position of the placenta, and how much "fluff" a mom has in the area as to whether or not you catch a heartbeat sooner or later. I'm tall, and I have a slim/athletic build, and though I can hear fetal movements with a Doppler at 16 weeks, my midwives still couldn't get the heartbeat. It was the same thing at 12 weeks. Some women might not hear it til they're 20 weeks along. So no, it's not "FALSE".
  • Wow! People get snippy on this site! FYI I got to hear the heartbeat at 9 weeks, as well!

Just think about the poor mom's-to-be who are at 14,15,16 weeks and they haven't been able to hear the fetal heartbeat! Wouldn't it be MORE annoying - and nerve-wracking-  to read that the heartbeat can be heard at week 12, when yours can't be heard until much later?

Please, don't be so snippy and have a heart for the moms who's little ones aren't just like yours.

  • I'm sure hearing the heartbeat is different for every mom, but I was lucky enough to hear it at 9 weeks too!! It was the most amazing sound I had ever heard. It brought tears to my eyes!!

  • We heard ours at 8 weeks, but everyone is different...BTW...I wouldn't recommend that anyone take what they learn on thebump.com as the "word". Talk to your Dr. if you have questions or concerns. I really look to this website for baby entertainment, and to get thoughts from other ladies experiencing the same, or different things than me. I would never use this site for factual information regarding my pregnancy or care for myself or baby. Just my opinion :)

  • I have had 6 children and have heard the heartbeat at different times with all of my children. The earliest i have heard the heartbeat is 12 weeks and latest was 15 weeks and the 15 week was with my twins because they were so small.
  • What is the brand and type of doppler you have at home? I am looking for one that hears before 20weeks gest. but havent found one yet. (We've looked @different walmarts, Meijer, Babies r Us, Toys r Us, ABC Kidz. Not online, yet)

    Thanks!

  • I also heard the heartbeat at 9 weeks. (and again at 13 weeks).  But my doctor did warn me that sometimes you aren't able to hear it that soon, it depends on the baby's co-operation.

However, since my doctor wanted to listen for the heartbeat that soon, I would only assume that it is quite common for people to be able to hear it by then.

  • my doctyor won't even check prior to 14 weeks. some doctors will check earlier

  • I'm pretty sure that they mean with a stethoscope without any amplification of the sound ;)
  • I was able to hear mine at 7 weeks
  • I must have been lucky we first heard our little one's heart beat around week 10 or 11. That was a tear jerkier moment for me:)

  • I heard my baby's heart at 6 weeks and it was so amazing!! I am somewhat overweight too, so I was surprised they could hear it through the extra belly chub.  It's different for everyone.  I'm 16 weeks now and have had 4 sonograms already where I got to see the baby and see the heart beating, and that's pretty unheard of.
  • I'm almost positive they mean by placing a regular run-of-the-mill stethoscope on your belly. I heard my baby's heartbeat at 7 weeks through an ultrasound.

  • I HEAR U!!! I am pregnant again and I am sooo thankful!!! But I was pregnant last yr and I was told at only 6 weeks after hearing a heartbeat that it was VERY low! That was my underlying message that this pregnancy MAY NOT make it! It did NOT either! At only 9 weeks the heartbeat was gone and I had just heard it at 8 weeks 5 days! So you can hear heartbeats WAY earlier than what has been stated here. But often times your first appointment to hear the heartbeat is not until the second trimester so maybe that's where they are getting this information from.
