XP kind of: Traveling with frozen BM

Should bm be okay if I put frozen bm (in Lansinoh bags) in a cooler with an ice pack and take it along for a 6-8 hour car ride, then put it in the freezer when I get to my destination?

If not, any ideas for how to get expressed bm to a 2 month old baby who will stay with grandparents (where DH and I will also be staying, 6-8 hours away from home) while I'm at a funeral for max 4ish hours, I would guess?

  • I think you'll be fine.  It may partially thaw out during that timeframe.  If it does, I would just try to use it within 24 hours of thawing.

  • Expressed BM is good in the fridge for about a week, so how about just saving up 2-3 days worth of pumped milk in the fridge right before you leave and then packing that in the cooler on ice?  Then you aren't dealing with the partial thaw that will inevitably happen with the frozen milk.

  • There are different rules for coolers.  If it stays frozen solid I treat it like it has been in the freezer.  If it starts to thaw I put it in the fridge and count deforst time from then.  Kellymom.com has the exact rules for coolers i think.

  • It should be okay, but if it thaws, you'll need to use it within 24 hours.  But it would definitely be fine to use.  You could also take fresh and put it in a cooler with a bunch of ice (or an ice pack, if that's all you've got).
