HELP: desert for bridal lunch (milk allergic bride)

Sorry to not be parenting related but I was getting nowhere trying to navigate back on the knot  - it has been 6 years for me.

Soooo... what deserts would be good for 1pm bridal lunch?  The bride has a milk allgery.  I know she can eat cake, but a lot of the icings don't work.

The other host is making quiches and a salad.

Thanks!!!

  • What about fruit with dairy free whipped cream?  do they make that?

  • I'm totally lactose intolerant and some of my favorite desserts are angel food cake with strawberries and Cool Whip, just cut up fruits, you can make meringues, ummmm- desserts are tough, honestly. But angel food cake with Cool Whip is a really good option. Still creamy and yummy with no lactose or milk protein at all.

  • I was thinking berry pies.  I'm not much into cake anyway.  You could even have small tarts.

  • key lime pie?

  • my friend, who is allergic to milk, makes an awesome chocolate pie with the soy milk brand called "Silk"...she actually used vanilla flavored silk and said if you go on their website there are some great recipes.
  • How dairy allergic is she?  Something like pie may or may not work, depending on if there is butter in the crust.  You'd have to check the ingredients carefully.  Same with Cool Whip--it may have dairy proteins (whey, caesin, etc) and still be labeled "non dairy."  LOTS of foods that say non dairy are NOT dairy-free.  Stay away from anything chocolate.

Fruit based desserts would be good.  It is pretty hard to find a pastry type dessert without butter in it.  This might be an issue for the quiches too (crust and fillings).

  • If you have a kosher or vegan bakery around you, I'd contact them and order a cake.  that would be easiest.  Another alternative would be baklavah.  Doulble check, but there are some dairy free option for baklavah available.

If you want to cook, look for some DF recipes online.  If you want to make something from a box, just double check the ingredients (many of the usual boxed products offer some dairy free options).  Make sure you use margarine or oil for mixing and that the margarine is DF (some margarine still has dairy in it).

  • Just google "dairy free desserts" and you'll get a ton of ideas if you want to make something.

If you want to buy, look for something marked Kosher pareve and you'll be fine.

PP is correct. Something that says "non dairy" (like non dairy creamer) can still have dairy products in it. It's just a marketing term. Learned this when I was nursing a milk allergic baby.

  • Another bride-y type idea would be sorbet. Watch out for sherbet, because it often has milk in it, but sorbet might be nice.
  • She is okay if the milk protein gets broken down by long baking times.

Thank you all soooo much!  I appreciate the help!

  • go to www.vegetariantimes.com and search for vegan recipes.  I made a tofu-strawberry tart for a friend for her bridal shower and it is awesome (as horrifying as it sounds).

  • I had a giant brownie cut into a flower shape at my shower - no icing required.

If you pick a cake that just requires a glaze, like a bundt cake, you can just use flavored soy milk and powdered sugar to make the glaze and then you can do just about any sort of cake you want.

But pie or individual tarts or crostata would be great too - apple pie, cherry pie, blueberry pie, strawberry pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie...

Or maybe just some fancy cookies for a lighter dessert - jam prints, almond cookies, maccaroons - cut into flower or heart shapes.

  • I have a severe milk allergy, it sucks big time!   Anyways, Duncan Hines makes a dairy free cake and frosting.  I have yet to find a bakery that would make one, so I make my own.

Some pies would be fine, there is a dairy free whipped cream (I haven't seen it yet but saw it in a magazine.)  If you go online they'll give you ideas and also you can print out a list of things to watch for.  For instance, I can't just look at a label and assume if it doesn't list milk that its safe.  There are many other dairy products that are listed under different things.

My personal favorite dairy free dessert is currently a tub of dairy free duncan hines frosting and a spoon :)
