You mentioned in a post a few days ago about E not liking to drink much because of her choking.. I sort of remember your posts about this, but not everything.. Was her choking on liquids related to the issues she had with eating solids too?  What is the cause of her choking on stuff, and what effects has it had?

I ask because Natalie chokes CONSTANTLY.. She chokes on her spit up mostly, but also medicine, and sometimes while nursing or a bottle.. I have asked her drs about this a couple times but they generally brush it off or say its normal and she'll outgrow it.. but Eve NEVER choked like that..and her reflux was just as bad, if not worse, and she wasn't ever medicated for it.. I am just worried that she'll not outgrow it and we'll have problems as she gets bigger..

  • Aww, I'm sorry that you are dealing with the choking.  It is so so scary!

Ellie didn't choke on food - maybe a couple times, but nothing frequent.  She just choked whenever she drank.  But every time she drank.  The thinner the liquid was worse - water is still bad for her.  Back when we were introducing her to cow milk and I would mix it with yogurt for taste, the thickening helped a lot.

We saw EI for it and they said it was most likely 1 of 2 things - a sensory thing (she doesn't recognize to switch from breathing to swallowing fast enough) or a physical thing (which can be seen with a swallow study).  We did the swallow study and they did see it, but there wasn't anything to be done.  They recommended to keep thickening if it was a problem.

She still chokes on water and occasionally milk, but it has gotten better.  But she doesn't get recurrent upper respiratory infections from aspirating, which they said was good.  I don't know what they would have done if she was, but that was the main thing they talked about.

She didn't have any reflux, so I'm not sure about that.  And she didn't choke when nursing. She did choke a lot on bottles, but around 4 months that got better.  We kept with a slow flow which helped a lot - and I had to try tons of different bottles to pick the one she choked the least on.

The dr dismissed her choking too for a long time - until she was almost a year old.  I think it might have been her 1 yr old appt actually that I was just like "I don't understand - how long do kids normally choke on sippies for?"  And then when I said she choked every time - and combined with her tongue thing where she would put the bottle nipple and when bfing her tongue above the nipple and spoon instead of below, she recommended me calling EI.  And that was when EI referred us to the swallow study.  It sucks bc we had seen EI at around 7 months bc of her tongue going up and I had brought up the choking then too, but we didn't start the sippy until 6 months, so they just figured she still needed extra time.

It isn't all better, but it has gotten better with time.  I hope Natalie improves too!
