Anyone already planning post-baby birth control?

DH and I are pretty sure this is our last baby but I'm not willing for either of us to make a permanent decision quite yet.  I will be getting Mirena again around 6 weeks PP.

Re: Anyone already planning post-baby birth control?

  • So far, I am just thinking condoms for 6 months and then whatever happens happens (want 1 or 2 more).

  • I gotta figure out something.  We didn't use anything...ANYTHING for 11 years.  We talked ONCE about TRYING to have a baby this last May.  Did the dirty THREE times and got pg.  Now I am scared to death.  LOL

  • Yes. We know this is our going to be our only child. With my PCOS, the only thing that ever seemed to help was BCP's. So back to my pills I go after baby is born.

  • I'm pretty sure this will be our last baby too. I am thinking of getting the Mirena. As far as more permanent solutions- No.

  • Back to pills for me - I tell DH he is going to get snipped bc there will be no more!

  • Well, I was on the pill when I got pg this time, so obviously I won't be trusting that as a fool-proof method of BC this time.  LOL  Plus, I'm high-risk due to a blood-clotting disorder and have been told that I can't be on the pill anymore anyway.  We are SURE we don't want any more (dh will be 46 when this one is born), so we're looking into the permanent options.  DH will definitely be snipped, and if I end up having a scheduled c-section, I will ask about having my tubes tied then, too.  We're not taking any chances.  LOL

  • We didn't use anything but timing for over a year before we got pregnant (we may have had some fertility issues) so probably not since we want to have more kids relatively close together.
  • There is a possibility that we will want one more but not as soon as we got pregnant with #2.  So I think I will go with Mirena.  After DS we just used condoms up until he was 1 and then started trying again for baby #2.  It took us a year to get pregnant the 2nd time so it was probably a good idea I didn't get Mirena the first time...I was considering it.  If we have a 3rd we would want the space between #2 and #3 to be more like 4-5 years.  So Mirena would be a good choice.

  • No plans.  It took us a while to get this one and we want at least 2 more.  If we are able to conceive naturally, we would graciously welcome that.

  • I don't ovulate and I don't have a period unless I'm on BCP. I'm curious to see if having a baby changes my body and if I will start ovulating. We haven't talked about any method because I had to take Clomid to conceive so, I guess, we'll see? We want 2 more for sure and if we can do it without help, then it's truly another blessing.

  • We are pretty sure this is going to be it for us. Something has to change DRASTICALLY financially for us to consider another. That being said I don't want anything permanent right now. DH has agreed to get the snip at 35 (in 8 years) so until then I want to be put on Mirena.

  • DH and I want 2-3 more and I'd like them close together (but not TOO close) so I'm not sure. I'll probably do the mini pill but I really hated taking daily pils so we'll see. When we're done having children I'll likely get mirena.

  • Birth control pills made me kinda crazy, so I would just like to naturally avoid it for a little while, probably use condoms. I still want more kids, so we will see how we feel about things after a few months...

  • I was on the pill when I got pg this time, so I'm obviously pretty wary of that option, and SO is the typical guy hating on condoms. He wants to get snipped saying it can be reversed but Im sure I want one more, and that makes me so nervous! So, we're not entirely sure WHAT we'll be using after. Maybe mirena? Ive heard some horror stories but I guess that goes with everything..

This all the way. BCPs are the only thing that keeps my PCOS symptoms hidden.

Oh yes...this will be our last, so I'm looking into Essure....it's procedure they do in the dr. office, and it's supposed to be more effective than tubal ligation, with very low chances for side effects.

The website is www.essure.com if you want to read up.  DH is too chickenshit to get snipped....and this seems like an easy procedure for me to undergo.

I've thought about getting an IUD, but I've heard horror stories about women who still got PG, or didn't realize it fell out.....to be honest the idea of ever being pregnant again scares the bejeezus out of me.

Not to be butting in, BUT make sure to ask your doctor about rejection rates (your body recognizing its foreign and attacking it), infection, and how the eggs naturally exit your body if its being blocked off, is that of concern?

Seems too easy and I'm a skeptic/nurse, hope it all works out! :)

  • Well I havent thought about it yet, we havent used any type of BC at all since getting married 6 years ago, but I hear after you have one it is easier to get knocked up again. I will have to do some kind of research because I dont want back to back children, I would like about a 2-3 year gap, DH wants 1-2 gap...

we still have somethings to decide here!

  • I was on the pill (quarterly periods only) for years and loved it! The best benefit was that it did away with my headaches that usually just came during my period.

This time, because I expect my schedule to be tougher, I'm planning on Mirena. I don't plan on having more kids, but haven't been able to talk DH into getting snipped.

  • If I can take BC pills immediately after birth I'm going to do it. I was on it for 10 years straight and the second I went off it I got pregnant. So I know BC pills work wonders for me and will help prevent baby #2 from coming too soon!
  • Hadn't thought about it yet, but now I will! I was on the pill for 10 years, and got pg within 3 months of going off (m/c at 7 weeks) then got pg again a month later! So, since we want a little gap between LO's, we'll be doing something for sure!

FWIW, my SIL had a 10 month old when she got pg with her 2nd. Not planned, and that was right about the time she stopped BF'ing as well.

  • It took us over a year to get pg after taking bcp, so I'm not sure. We haven't decided if we want to have more than one yet. We have plans to continue to travel part of the year or every other year until our baby is school aged, and it will be a lot easier/cheaper/more practical with only one. We're going to wait and see, I guess.

  • DH will get snipped when DS is about 3 months old. I will also get the paraguard at about 6 weeks. We definitely don't want any more kids. He has agreed to be snipped and I have already stated that until he does so he will not be getting any.

  • I'm not a fan of BC...don't think prolonged use of any kind of medication is a good thing, unless it's something required for livelihood.  I went off BC about 2 years ago.  I have PCOS, and even on BC was really irregular...so I don't really know if what I'll be doing!  I'll be interested to see if being pregnant changes my PCOS issues at all.

Not single and love my hubby, but I have done Nuva ring for years.  LOVE IT!  Super easy, and no pill all the time.  I will start that again after lo arrives.  We were off it a month when I conceived.  I had been on some method of bc pills for over 10 years.

  • We've been using the pull and pray method since about a year after we got married, and it worked for us!  We do want one more child, and with our fertility issues, I'd like it to happen sooner rather than later so I can put all this pregnancy stuff behind me and just enjoy having a family.  We may start trying again very soon.

  • We actually are uncomfortable with any form of birth control other than charting/tracking/avoiding (not saying it's bad for everyone, just for us!) so we will probably just pick right up where we left off!

We'd been married for 2 years before I got pregnant, so I think we'll be able to continue with this method. :-)

  • We're planning on having more (at least one; maybe two), so it'll be back to charting and condoms for us! We want our kids to be spaced apart about 3yrs, so having a good BC plan is important to us. :)

After we're all done having kids, DH will get snipped. :) I may still continue to chart casually, so I know when to expect Aunt Flo!

  • When I was in college I was on Depo and it made me feel crazy and I was on it for a long time so I switched to the Nuva ring and I really like it the doctor usaully gives me them in packs of 3 so I don't have to order more for awhile. Def not the pill I know I would forget.

  • I was on BCP for 12 years and, while I never had any issues while on the pill, I feel as if it really effed my cycles up and/or masked fertility issues that were already there.  Definitely will not be going back to any sort of hormonal bc until we are finished having kids, so probably condoms and charting until we're ready for #2.

  • I'm planning on going back on the pill after this pregnancy (despite having gotten pregnant while on the pill this time. Lol).

We definitely want one more. Maybe two so I'm just going to assume that if I get pregnant while on the pill, it was meant to be.

  • Great Questions-- think I'm a little late in responding. .  and honestly I don't really know all the options.

This is our first and we plan to have more.  I was on the pill for 10 years prior to pregnanby and had my period every 3 months.  Loved it!

What can you do for BC pill while you are breastfeeding?  I'm not a fan of condom (niehter is the H), but I really am not educated enough about what else there is during that time period.

  • The pill (and any other kind of hormonal birth control method, for that matter) turns me into a psycho b!tch faster than you can say "gesundheit." I've tried every kind available over the course of several years, and nothing has worked - and left me feeling like a normal human being - so that's not an option for us. We both hate condoms, but don't know if we entirely trust ourselves with the pull-out-in-time method.

We're set on having just one kid, so we've started talking about the option of either tubal ligation or vasectomy. However, talking about that made us think about the horrible possibility of (heaven forbid) something happening to our dear little one in a few years. What then? We would probably want to try for another baby. The permanence of such a procedure scares me.

  • Since it took us some struggle to get pregnant this time, we won't be using anything to prevent. We'll start trying after a few months, but if by some miracle we get pregnant again sooner then I'm okay with that.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. -Philo

The mini pill is safe to take while you are BFing.  It does not affect your milk supply.
