Making Your Own Baby Food. Tips & Suggestions Wanted.

Hi! I am popping over from the August 2011 board to get some input about making your own baby food. LO was born on 7/29/11 and with the holidays coming around I wanted to add the necessary products to my wish list.

For those that make their own baby food please recommend the following:

Favorite Baby Food Cookbook

Food Maker

Food Storage

Also, any other tips and/or suggestions are welcome.

TIA!

  • Favorite Baby Food Cookbook

https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/ No book necessary. This site has all you need to know... and it's free and always available.

    Food Maker

I have a Baby Bullet, but any blender or food processor will do the job. I didn't own either, so I had to buy something. The smiley face won me over.

I just use a regular in-pot steamer (the metal collander thing that looks like a space ship).

    Food Storage

I make the food, pour it into ice cube trays and then pop them out and store the food in freezer bags (labeled with the food type and date). I've used both plastic and silicone trays... I prefer the silicone. They pop out so much easier.

For those that make their own baby food please recommend the following:

Favorite Baby Food Cookbook--Tyler Florence's Start Fresh

Food Make--Bamboo Steamer, Magic Bullet & an immersion blender

Food Storage--Rubbermaid tiny cups (bought at grocery store), ice cube tray & ziploc freezer bags

Also, any other tips and/or suggestions are welcome. It's really easy to use the cheapie bamboo steamer and a blender, I don't think you need a fancy/expensive baby related system. Also, don't make a huge quantity until you know they like something because it will only last in the freezer for a month, 3 at the very most.

    TIA!

So far we are using the book Top 100 Baby Purees... I've already made sweet potato, carrot, apple, pear, apple+pear+cinnamon mixture... It also has a lot of fun "Food Facts" (i.e. carrots cooked with butter helps the absorption of the beta-carotene)... It also tells you which baby foods are suitable for freezing, when to introduce them, and approx. how long they take to make... the only thing I dislike is that some of the ones for older children are fairly intensive... Check out the "look inside" feature on amazon

    Food Maker

I just use my blender, but it won't work if I want to make an individual meal... I do lose a little bit at the bottom of the blender, but not so much that I want to go out and buy anything...

ETA: I use a basic steamer from walmart that "fits in any pot"... It was like $5 and folds up pretty small for storage

    Food Storage

I bought these nifty ice cube trays from target that have slightly smaller oval shaped ice cube holes (???---not sure what else to call them lol)... I freeze the food and then put it in ziploc bags that are labeled appropriately with the type of food and expiration date...

    Other Tips

Don't make too many ahead of time... I got really carried away and I bet that I will run out of time before I get to use every last serving I made... Make them in advance so that you can just grab a serving out of the freezer and heat it up in the microwave until steaming, then let it cool and serve...

    GL and have fun :D

Exactly this. Except I use a mini food processor.

I agree, https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com is a great website to use. I'm also using this book: The Everything Organic Cooking for Baby and Toddler Book. While I don't always buy everything organic, they still have good recipes....the younger recipes are pretty simple and similar to the ones on the Wholesome Baby Food website, but the recipes for when they get older are super creative and healthy.

    Food Maker

I have a small blender similar to the Magic Bullet that works great.

    Food Storage

I use Mumi and Bubi freezer trays. They are easy to get the food out and can hold way more than a regular ice cube trays. I bought them on Amazon.com. Once the food is frozen, you can pop out the cubes and transfer them to freezer bags for storage so your trays are free to fill with more food.

Here are my trays, ready for the freezer and full of sweet potato, pears, mango, butternut squash and green beans:

  • Books: I agree with the previous posts about  https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com   it is a great site!  Very informative and lots of great recipes.  I also use Tyler Florence's book Fresh Start.  (his baby food line, Sprout, is also a great on the go alternative!)

Prep: I use the BabyCook system, which I find to be super easy, it steams and purees all in one bowl.  But any streamer and blender will work great.

Strorage:  I really like the Oxo brand storage containers for baby food (just smaller size).  I also have the BabyCook silicone trays that came with my BabyCook.  I usually just freeze everything in the sizes I want and then transfer them to Ziploc freezer bags.
