2nd Trimester

prenatal vitamin help

Hi ladies,

Last pregnancy and so far in this pregnancy I have been taking VitafolOB + DHA.  They worked great and I LOVE that they don't have actual fish oil in them.  Lately they've been bothering my stomach a lot so my dr suggested I try some new samples.  She gave me NestabsDha andNexaSelect.  I tried the Nestabs yest and tonight which have been better on my stomach but tonight they are upsetting me and I keep burping up the fish - so these are out.  THe NExaSelect has plant based DHa so there's no fish oil which is good but it is missing vitamin B1, B2, B12 so it made me nervous.  I figured it must be ok if it's on the market but was hesitant.  Anyone have recommendations that do NOT repeat the fishy aftertaste?  Anyone take NexaSelect that finds them good?  Thanks!

Re: prenatal vitamin help

  • I take Meijer brand prenatal and a seperate DHA. I have not had a problem with either one and I have been taking them since the start of my pregnancy. The DHA is Spring Valley which I get at Walmart and it has Omega - 3 in it and is fish free. If you are having a problem with vitamins upsetting your stomach try eating something with them and take them at night before you go to bed.

  • I take NexaSelect and don't mind them at all. I've never noticed any bad smell or taste; in fact, they have a vanilla smell and/or flavor built in.
  • I take the generic Target brand DHA and the generic prenatals and have never noticed any sort of after taste.

  • I had problems with my prenatals in the first trimester.I had to stop taking them because they made me sick as a dog even when eating with them.So I asked my doctor for a chewable prenatal and she prescribed me OB Complete with DHA.They were so freakin nasty she suggested me take two Flinstones vitamins which are the equivalent to one prenatal vitamin.Only thing I didn't like about the Flinstones vitamins is they don't have iron in them.Crazy I know since a child needs it but whatever.Once I got into my second trimester I started taking my original prenatals and haven't had anymore problems.

Forgot to mention above that I'm taking NeevoDHA with Life's DHA

  • I love loved vitafusion prenatal gummy vitamins with DHA. I cannot stand the taste of tablet vitamins (I will take calcium gel-caps). These tasted great, no upset tummy even when I took them on an empty stomach. You can take vitamins before bed to avoid any upset tummy (I found this helped when I was on other vitamins). One drawback is that gummy vitamins do no have iron in them. This isn't a problem for me since my iron levels are always fine, but can be an issue for people that tend towards anemia. Iron sometimes can be another cause for stomach upset after taking vitamins ( I know you mentioned the taste of DHA).

  • I take Target brand, Up&Up, DHA, it's algea based so it's never gives the fishy taste. I can't remember what brand my PNV are, Rainbow or something. I got them at Walmart, and they have probiotics, along with ginger, and a few other natural things in them. I LOVE my PNV to death (the probiotics keep me from getting terribly backed up), so I'll be taking the DHA seperate proably until after baby arrives. Then maybe I'll switch to a combined one while breastfeeding... it does kind of suck to have to remember 2 pills everyday and when traveling.
