Two Under 2

Not finding out the gender for #3?

So Dh and I have always wanted to not find out the sex of the baby, but had no will power with #1, and with #2 I wanted to know if it was a girl really badly. Now that we have a boy and a girl, we decided to not find out. I really want that moment, and I want DH to announce whether the baby is a boy or girl when I deliver. I think we can do it!

My family thinks otherwise, but whatever.

Anyone find out and then not? was it really hard to get through the 20 wk u/s?

Re: Not finding out the gender for #3?

  • DH jokingly suggested that we do this with #3, but I could never do it. I don't have the will power AT ALL!

  • I am very stubborn so someone telling me that I won't be able to wait to find out would be enough motivation for me!  We didn't find out with the first and we won't with this one either.  It was hard at the 20 week ultrasound but it was so worth it.  My mom told me of a study that those who don't find out have an easier time getting through the last weeks because they have something to look forward to.  I think it was true for me.  I just kept thinking about how close we were to finding out if it were a boy a girl.  As I was pushing out the baby I got through it because I couldn't wait to see if it was a boy or girl.  It was also amazing to have the doctor tell us it was a little girl.  I think it's an amazing experience and I think you'd love to experience it.

  • i'm debating if we will do that with #4 (our last). It would be hard for us though b/c we will have 3 girls so if we "happened" to have a boy we would have NOTHING blue. I don't know I have the will power though b/c I love planning the nursery, etc. I would definitely give it a try (maybe have tech write it down and seal it and put in a locked cabinet in case we changed our mind...lol).
  • We (okay I) don't have the willpower but we're thinking about doing what a friend of mine did. They found out but didn't tell anyone so they got to know what it was BUT also got to make the big "it's a ____" announcement after the delivery and have it be a surprise for everyone else. She really wanted to find out but her husband wanted that moment to announce so it was their compromise. Now how they made it through the last 20 weeks without slipping up is beyond me but we might give it a try. At the very least to drive people crazy for a bit ;-)

  • We're just the opposite - we didn't find out for 1 & 2 and then found out for #3. I really loved being surprised, but finding out was nice too. I have a friend that found out with 1 & 2 and was surprised for #3 and she said she really loved it. I don't think there's much of a difference (just a surprise a bit earlier on) but I say if you have the willpower to do it - go for it! It's really fun to wait it out.

  • We've done team green with all 3.  For me it's really easy to get through the 20 wk u/s... I have no desire to find out until delivery.  I feel like it's one of the best surprises you can get:)  Stay strong!!

  • I never thought I wouldn't find out.. but we decided to be Team Green for #2.
It honestly wasn't hard like I thought it would be. I just keep imagining the moment where DH can announce to me "IT'S A ____!" after labor.. I think it will be SO special :)

  • If we have a third, I would like to think that I would be team green but I'm not sure I have the will power.  Good luck!

  • We wanted to wait with this one.  But ultrasound day was too difficult to get through without finding out the gender...so we broke!

I also had a friend who kept the gender a secret and announced it at birth :) Maybe that would be my best option!!

  • I said I was going to do this but I didn't, we found out at 20 wks.   I also had a girl and a boy but I REALLY wanted DD to have a sister.   I am glad I found out and "grieved" not having another girl before the arrival. I know this is horrible in theory, I cried for a couple of days after finding out, nothing a shopping trip couldn't fix tho.   I myself had always wanted a sister, never got it so I had hoped DD would get to experience it.  No chance.  Although I have to admit that DS2 is absolutely fabulous  and fits better into our family than a girl would...I am glad DS1 gets a brother.

  • This is our 3rd surprise. I love it, and dont get why people say it's so hard, what will they wear etc.  Babies all need the same basics, and acouple neutral outfits/sleepbags.  I wash our nb boy stuff and usually pick up acouple girl nb outfits, but dont wash them.  It is fun to go out a week or so after baby to pick up some new things, and maybe girl stuff if we need it.

  • We didn't want to find out with #1, but the ultrasound tech told us!! We were pretty upset, as you can imagine... but at the same time, it made the whole thing that much more real.

This time we are trying to be even more adamant with doctors, etc. to not tell us. It is actually less difficult this time around because I simply have no time to obsess about the pregnancy (with a one year old, a full time job and getting ready to move halfway around the world in 6 weeks). Neither DH nor I have any preference, so that helps, and we aren't planning on buying 'anything' new for the baby (obviously we will buy some girl clothes if it's a girl).

No one understands why we don't want to know and everyone 'is hoping' for a girl for us! I think it's just silly.
