Ramona's Middle Name

I'd rather post this here than on the name board :-P

I just came across the name Xylan. It's Greek and it means "of the forest" Since Ramona means "protector", it would make her "protector of the forest". Which I really like. We have been searching for an unusual middle name and this does fit in that category.

It's pronounced like Zy-lynn.

Opinions?

  • I don't think it is bad, but I should warn you, I am a BNB poster. Surprise

Are you or YH Greek?  Not that it matters, I am just nosey.

At first glance I think Dylan with an X.  It is unusual, but I would think boy.  It is a MN though, so I am sure that I would not think boy when I heard Ramona Xylan. Wink  It also makes me think this is just going with the new popularity of X & Zs in names (not saying it is bad, just an observation).

  • We're not Greek but I've studied a lot of Greek and Greek culture and I taught it for a few years so it has some significance for me.

I thought of the Dylan thing too but it's not really pronounced like that and I figured as a middle name no one will really think of it that way.

I am a little worried about it just looking trendy because of the X. Trendy is something we'd like to stay away from, definitely.

I can totally get behind the Greek thing then. Wink  Significance is important in a mn, imho.

On paper, I would pronounce it like it is spelled, similar to Dylan.  I am not a fan of changing a name's original spelling, and with this one it could look too much like a lynn added to the end of another name if you spelled it Xylynn.  Plus it is not as eye-appealing spelled that way.  I feel stumped by this name, but there is something about it I like.Hmm

Most importantly, can you use cathom7's criteria with it?  Can you say it like the child is in trouble?  "Ramona Xylan get over here right now!" or "Ramona Xylan we don't pull the dog/cat's tail!"  Her other one has to do with a sports announcer, I think.

  • I think it is pretty and different. The names go together in an interesting way. Names are TOTALLY personal . . . if you and DH like it, go with it!

  • I agree with the previous posters that you and your DH should go with it if it is a name you absolutely love. I also agree with their comments on the ending - I want to pronounce it like Zy-lan (like land without the d). But, because it's a middle name, I wouldn't really be too concerned with how other people pronounce it - the only time people other than your relatives might actually refer to you using your middle name are at graduations and weddings. It's unique and different - I always appreciate seeing something a little less common.

  • Definitely not my style, BUT I think middle names are an excellent place to be different if you have a hankering to do so and I do like that the Greek origin has meaning to you!

    I agree completely.  I'm a BNB poster too :)

After reading the history of the name, it's not bad but I think you are going to get a lot of "WTF?" looks.  I agree with Clucky about the new trendy of X and Z names.

  • I don't think it sounds masculine at all, but that might be because my 9 year old DD is named Kylynn.
