Nutramigen...help!

I have been EPing through a suspected milk/soy intolerance. Its gotten too rough. I keep having issues with clogged ducts, thrush... arg!

I started mixing in the Nutramigen yesterday. Initially, she seemed to dislike the taste, but I was mixing into BM. By the end of the day, she was fine. This morning she was fine. She had two large poops- a bit different than normal BM poops. The second contained some mucous. Now, shes ultra fussy. Just like before we diagnosed the problem, 7 weeks ago.

WTfrack is going on? Is her belly just getting used to this formula? Is she reacting to it? I am seriously reconsidering. She was so much improved on the elimination diet, but I am struggling with the pump.

I don't know why she is crying. Now, I am. I started to cut back on pumping, and probably have put a notch in my supply, I am sure. Any ideas?

Re: Nutramigen...help!

  • If I remember correctly, Nurtamigen still has milk /soy in it. My son could not handle this one. We switched him to the Similac Alimentium and he is still on it.
DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

  • Sounds like you might need Neocate or Elecare, which doesn't contain the trace amounts of milk that Nutramagin does.  My lo could not tolerate Nutramagin but Neocate has done wonders for him. GL!
  • My clogged ducts are from crazy oversupply. Thats all. Today was the first day I tried to cut back on pumping. I just pumped until empty...back on the horse, I guess. Lame. I really wanted my boobies to heal from this abuse.

I have a call into my Ped. I don't think she even believes LO has a milk/soy problem. Um, yes. Yes she does. I am so disappointed. She told me to try the Nutramigen. Bah!

  • Same here - pediatrician told us to try Nutramagin and he screamed and cried, almost worse than before.  We went to a GI specialist and the FIRST thing he said is that Nutramagin has more milk protein than I probably had in my diet.  I think it works well when they start to outgrow (hopefully) the allergy but not when it's at its worst.  I say try Neocate or the Elecare.  I was so frustrated with my pedi through all of this. Thank God for specialists.
  • My Ped emailed me at 10pm last night. She wants me to give it a couple more days and will send me to a specialist if she isnt better. Or, I can try Elecare. I just looked at the cost...OH MY GOD. I can't afford that.

I know, it's crazy expensive.  Our insurance covers it at 80% and I'm no expert on this and I'm sure other cans chime in, but there is a law in some state (including mine) that insurance HAS to help cover it because it's essential nutrition for lo's.  I guess your pediatrician has to prescribe it and that's the proof that your lo requires it.  Like I said, I'm no expert and luckily didn't have to be because our insurance provider has been awesome.  I am a big believer in specialists, though - the expert will tell you exactly what your lo needs!

  • I am at a loss. Keeping trucking with Nutra or keep pumpin. Someone else told me thier LO did the same thing, and 6 days in, is perfect.  I'd really like to stop pumping as I feel like there is some element she reacts to. Arg!

  • The GI specialist just put our LO on Elecare as well.  At first I was shocked at the price as well!  Then I read the elecare website and it said that some states require a certain portion of it be covered.  I called my insurance company BCBS and they took care of the rest.  They connected me to the mail order pharmacy that they use and we found out that it was covered at 80% which mate it about 8 bucks a can.  I would contact your insurance company and see if they cover it.  I have seen a difference in just one week from the switch.
