Breastfeeding

Is this weird? (Peeling baby off after every feeding.)

You know that adorable, slightly pursed-lip/drunken milk-coma look a baby gets when it comes off the breast after a satisfying feeding?  I never get to see that with my little guy because he would stay on my breasts for hours if I let him! Am I being used as a pacifier? I have to peel him off my breasts after every feeding.

In the first month or so, he did come off, satisfied, a few times, but not often.  He has only come off the breast on his own maybe once or twice in the last two months, and that was when I was very full after going 9+ hours overnight without pumping or nursing.

My milk supply is good (I can pump about 7 - 8 oz in the morning at work, and 5 - 7 in the afternoon) and my baby does seem satisfied after I pull him off my breast myself, though he always tries to latch back on first. Occasionally he protests for a couple seconds (usually before bedtime) and I have to give him a pacifier since he wants to keep sucking.   He's gaining weight and growing very well, and he was almost exclusively breastfed before I started pumping, so I know he can get enough milk at the breast.  I'd normally think he just loves to suck, but he doesn't want his pacifier at any other time except after nursing.  I unlatch him once active sucking has stopped and he seems to be nibbling, but I think he's just hanging out waiting for another let-down, even if he's full.  (He'd also probably drink an 8 or 9 oz bottle if we let him, which is WAY too much for him, so I'm a little worried he has no sense of when he's full.  He's also an extreme spitter, but a pediatric GI specialist has assured us he's healthy and his sphincter just really doesn't work well yet.  Lovely.)

Is this all just a normal variance for breastfed infants?  I can't find much information out there on this other than articles making it sound like baby's latch is terrible and my milk supply is low, and neither of those is the case.

  • I always do.  He NEVER unlatches on his own.  Ever.  He also refuses to take a paci.  It is the.boob.or.nothing for that boy!

  • My LO sometimes unlatches on his own but not very regularly.  Usu, I will unlatch him b/c 50% of the time he will still fall asleep while eating.

  • She unlatches, looks away, attacks the boob, sucks, hangs out, repeat. I never know when she is done.

  • I love this post I wondered the same thing almost a year ago now, and I can tell you my almost one year old would use me as a pacifier all  night long some nights if I would let him. Which is going to be hard now as I start to try to wean him. He loves his binki but loves to be held and be at my breast more. I can tell you he is a normal weight baby who loves to eat but loves to move more. I wouldn't worry you are doing the right thing not letting your lo use you as a pacifier after talking to alot of moms it is more normal than most of us think at first. good luck

  • If my LO could be at the boob all day long he would. I know when he's done because he stops swallowing and starts using me as a paci. When I take him off 75% of the time he gets mad but when I give him his paci he is fine. Some babies just love nursing for comfort :)

  • DD basically never de-latched on her own unless she was completely asleep.  I had to cut her off basically every nursing session until she was probably 6 months old.

  • Phew!  Thanks for the responses, they make me feel a lot better. I have a few friends and coworkers (and even a lactation consultant) who thought it was very strange that LO never de-latched on his own so I was starting to think something was wrong with me or him.  Glad he's in the company of many other hardcore comfort nursers . :)
