2nd Trimester

Question for those of you that had NT Scan

Is there anything I need to do to prep for it. They didn't tell me anything. I have it on Friday at 730am. Do I need to drink a lot of water first or anything? Thanks Second Tri team! (Looking foward to joining you soon!)

Re: Question for those of you that had NT Scan

  • I didn't have to do anything special for mine. Your doctor's office should tell you if you need a full bladder but it doesn't hurt to call and ask.

  • Mine didn't require I drink any amount of water, but once I got there I was told not to use the restroom anymore. They actually got a better shot with an empty bladder but did try with a full one at first.
  • When I had mine at 11 weeks the tech was having a little trouble getting good images and asked if I might be dehydrated....I'm not sure if that was just her experience, but I guess it may be easier to see when you're well hydrated

  • My OB didn't tell me to do anything other than show up for the scan...and I am pretty sure I was a tad dehydrated that day due to some earlier morning sickness.  Best wishes!

  • You don't have to do anything special unless they tell you to, but it would be a good idea to bring with you (*NOT* eat/drink beforehand!!!) a bottle of OJ/apple juice or a sugary snack, in case your baby's taking a nap during the u/s and won't get into the right position -- they need the baby to get into a pretty specific position to take the images they need to get their measurements. The sugar in the juice/snack can get the baby moving. :)

  • I wasn't told anything about drinking as well and once I was there they asked me to empty my bladder. Good luck!

  • You are lucky you don't have to have a full bladder!  I didn't have to do anything when I had my son, but this time they make me have a full bladder every time! ugh!

  • I had to leave a urine sample but they want one every time I go.  There wasn't any prep for it at all.

  • I actually had to go in twice because the first time around the baby was not cooperating. I was told to drink water and orange juice. And to wait to pee until I went in to see the tech.

  • Nope - you won't need to do anything to prep.

When I had my first appt, the scan wasn't even scheduled yet but they had an opening and let me take the slot so I wouldn't have to come back another day and take off from work. So, mine was imprompu and still did nothing to prep.

(My previous appts were with my GYN who doesn't do OB stuff - they get you through the first tri which is why I didn't meet with the OB until 12 weeks).

Good luck - it's amazing how much growth there is from 6 weeks to 8 weeks to 12 - 12 is shocking as it actually looks like a person in there!

Alex has arrived! 9 pounds, 21 inches - 3 weeks early on March 2nd ~went natural - very intense. whew!~
  • Nope.  Just show up and hope your LO cooperates (it took me three hours to get the baby to move to the right position.)  Best wishes!
