2nd Trimester

Failed my 1st Glucose Test, any advice???

When I was pregnant with DS I passed my test.  This time around I failed and now I'm due to have the 3 hour test this coming Friday.  I'm really dreading that I will fail this test too.  So now until Friday I should really watch my sugar intake,

  • I have my test on Friday, so obviously I don't have any advice yet...but, may I ask how long till you received the results? I am nervous about this too because diabetes runs in my family.

  • I failed by 1 point with DS and had to do the 3 hour, it wasn't fun, but most people who fail the 1st one do pass the 2nd, so try not to stress.  For me, the hardest thing was having to drink that sugary drink every hour without having any food, after the second drink, I almost threw up but held it together because I didn't want to have to redo it.  Bring your laptop, a book, ipod, anything to keep you entertained.
  • Depending on where you are. My office we get to take the drink at home and go in for my blood draw apt. I passed by 1 pt the first time at 18 weeks. I find out tomorrow when they want me to test again. Just if you can and have the energy. walk around try to burn off some of the sugar. the 3 hour test i take i drink the one and then they do the blood draw every hour for 3 hours. wow all this sugar talk im hungry lol

  • My advise is to follow the directions exactly as they are given before your 3 hour test.  Failing this one means something is wrong not that YOU did anything wrong.  You really want the results to be accurate!

DO NOT do things like go for a long walk to burn off sugar unless you plan to do that after MOST of your meals for the rest of your pregnancy.  Really, why would you want to *pass* this test if you really shouldn't.  It's called gestational diabetes.  It isn't a math test.  You can't study for it, KWIM.

  • With DD I failed the 1 hour test and came back a couple days later and took the 3 hour test.  I passed the 3 hour test.  So more than likely you will pass.  The 3 hour test for me, I only drank 1 sugary drink (which was 2 times as strong as the 1 hour drink you took).  I got there at 8am after fasting and had blood drawn, drank the sugary drink, then the next hour another blood draw and then 1 more blood draw in another hour.  It wasn't that bad, the worst part was when I left I got really shaky because all i had to eat was that sugary drink!  Once I ate I was fine.  I have my 1 hour test in 3 weeks and I am so dreading it, I hope I pass!  GL!

  • teacherlindz:  I normally get my results 1-2 days after the blood test.  Good Luck with your test.

Thank you to everyone else for your advice.  Truly appreciated.

  • my SIL failed the 1hr and passed the 3hr. I think they said she had a UTI that caused her to fail the 1st one.

She wasn't supposed to reduce sugar intake leading up to the 3hr test. In fact they said to eat as much sugar as always, AND to drink an extra sugary soda or two as well. I was with her that weekend and she took in plenty of sugar and passed the test.

    Good luck!

  • Just follow the instructions for the test.  You might have to fast the night before.  You will most likely be required to sit and remain relatively still in between draws.  They are tasting the baseline of how your body processes sugar.  You don't want to "beat" the test, especially if you actually have gestational diabetes.  Good luck!  It is a long, boring morning.  Bring a book or some magazines and be prepared to just hang out and be tired and bored.

  • I passed the 1-hour with my DS and failed the 1-hour this time around. The 3-hour sucked, I'm not going to lie. I only had to drink one drink thank god, but it was awful and having not eaten anything since dinner the night before, it was hard. My OB told me to walk around between draws, which I did. I passed all 4 blood draws (I think you have to have two numbers within range (out of the 4) to pass, and I passed them all, so that was nice. You'll very likely pass, don't stress too much!

Oh and definitely bring a snack with you for RIGHT after you're done-- I brought peanut butter and graham crackers, and thank god. I felt like I was going to pass out!

I took my test on a Friday morning and they called about 3pm to tell me I passed.

  • I failed my 1 hour at 10 weeks..and my 3 hour at 11 weeks.  I have been watching what I have been eating since then.  Met with my perinatologist after monitoring my sugar levels for 2 weeks.  He said they were perfect.  I still have a long way to go!  Oh and I suggested to my ob to take the test since diabetes is so prominent in my family.  I was not diabetic prior to getting pregnant, but of course I wanted what was best for my LO and I.

Tips, do bring a snack for after the test!  I was so hungry!  And bring something to do!  I did bring something to do but I was getting a little dizzy that I just needed to focus on something that I could stare at.
