Sleep issues when you brought home your newborn DC#2?

I'm 38 weeks pregnant with DD#2 and DD#1 is 19 months. I'm wondering how big of an issue it's going to be (for DD#1) bringing in a newborn that's waking every 2-3 hours through the night. DD is an excellent sleeper. Her room is across the house from ours (which is where DD#2 will be staying for a while) but it is not a huge house. I'd obviously like to disrupt her sleep schedule as little as possible. Experiences? Did you find that is was necessary to have a sound machine, fan, or something to create "background noise" in the room with your older child? TIA! So looking forward to having my 2u2!!

  • I wish I knew the answer, but I am in the same boat with boys... I can't wait to read some answers. Although I kind of worry about DS 1 keeping up DS 2, because he still CIO. Trying to hlep him with that, but it still hasn't gotten much better.

  • DD's room is right next to ours. She sleeps through the night but has used a sound machine even before DS came along. When we brought DS home DD did wake up to his cry the 1st night, but after that it was no longer an issue. She is a super sensitive sleeper, so I'm glad the adjustment was not too bad.

  • DDs room is right next to DS's. Sometimes when I go to change and feed him he is crying pretty good and DD doesn't wake. She doesn't have any sound machines and has always been a good sleeper. I was worried she would be waking up with the crying through the night, but so far it hasn't been an issue. Hope it's the same for you!

All of this sounds like my DD except my DS's cries never woke her up. Once she's asleep, she's *usually* asleep for good. We use a sound machine (in both kids' rooms), but we have been using it for a while now. Without it, I know she would wake up. She is a VERY light sleeper. This was my biggest fear with bringing DS home.

  • DS1 was 19 mos when DS2 was born as well and honestly it was really only the first week that DS1 woke up in the night...honestly though, before DS2 DS1 wasn't a great sleeper so I have no clue if it was actually the baby waking him up or just his normal sleep pattern.  I just make sure DS1's door is shut at night so he's not hearing any extra noise and I try to be as quiet as possible.  Thankfully, DS2 is not a big crier at night, once I pick him up he usually calms right down.
