Minnesota Babies

Anyone else delivering/delivered at United?

We're getting ready to pre-register and inquire about a hospital tour, but based off the options my OB has given, I think we're planning to deliver at United.

Anyone else doing or done so? Thoughts? Advice? Insights?

 Thank you! :)

Re: Anyone else delivering/delivered at United?

  • My sister just had her baby there in September and I won't tell the whole story but I wouldn't wish United on my worst enemy after my sister's experience.  The nurse's were awful, and one OB she had during the course of her 4 day labor was just a mega B**ch, and if I'd been at the hospital when she said what she said, I'd be in jail right now for assault!

  • I have heard mixed feelings about United, two of my sisters hated it, saying that the staff was rude,  very judgemental and spoke down to them. Then there is one of my other sisters who has had to deliveries there one where she lost her twins and the other with a health baby! She has spoken nothing but praise about the hopital. Where do you live? I delivered my son at Woodwinds in Woodbury, it is a wonderful hospital! It is very quiet, the staff is wonderful and helpful, and the food isn't as horrible as other hopitals I have been to ;-)

    Hope this helped!

  • Yeah, I liked it after I had DS1, but after having DS2 and experiencing the awesomeness of Methodist... United sucks.

I had a really horrible c-section experience, where I felt my surgery.  I have heard of another woman who had the same experience at United.  I thought the nurses were all right.  Food was great.  The OB that performed my surgery was terrible (well, the surgery went well, my scar is beautiful and everything held up well for my VBAC... but she started cutting me after I said I wasn't numb).

I went through one of the Allina OB groups, and I didn't realize just how many OBs were in rotation.  I thought I would at least have one from my location.  But no.  I had 3 OBs while I was in labor and none of them were from my location.

Also, their c/s rate is really high.

  • Out of curiosity, what other hospitals can you choose from?  I've had two different friends deliver there and there experiences were okay.  Negatives from a visiters stand point.  Parking is a pain and it felt like we had to go all over the place to get to the maternity section.  The rooms are tiny!  Two other friends and I were visiting our friend and there was pretty much no room for anyone to visit.  Maybe I'm crazy, but we were able to have tons of people visit our room in St. Johns without any issues (at one point I think we had maybe 14 people).  It was really loud there too.

  • I will be delivering there, and from the hospital tour, it seems like a great place to have a baby (however, I'm not fond of the room change, but I get why they do it). Anyway, I don't have any other experience there except for one other person who delivered about 10 years ago and had a great experience.

I have no problem telling someone that I've got a problem with them if they are treating me like crap. This is a very scary and exciting time for me, and I won't deal with a *** for a nurse. One OB that I started with I didn't like, so I switched. I will have no problem telling a nurse to back off or change her attitude with me if it isn't going well. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourselves ladies, regardless of where you deliver.

  • That's exactly what my sister did...stand up for herself, and what the OB said was just obsurd and mean.  So don't count on asserting yourself working all the time.

I delivered at Regions and while I know there are people here that wouldn't deliver there, I had an awesome experience my MW was awesome, the nurse's were awesome, and very supportive, and the food wasn't too bad either.  I also had about the most standard easy vaginal birth with epidural so maybe it would have been a different experience if it were more complicated, but I loved Regions.  Since we're not really in the "have another one" boat quite yet (or ever) I don't know where we'd go again, but probably St. John's.

You don't have to do a room change if you are in the 2300 rooms.

  • We live in Inver Grove Heights and we've only lived in the area for about 4-5 years so I'm not sure where else my options are. I see a certified midwife/nurse practitioner at Aspen Medical Clinic - Bandana Square where we used to live up until late summer. She said the only 2 hospitals their OBs deliver out of is either United or one in Maplewood...can't remember the name of it. United just happend to be the closer of the 2 for us.

This is our first experience so I'm pretty nervous...and I'm not great about asserting myself in unfamiliar experiences...eeek.

  • I'd do St John's over United.

Although it's odd they'll go to Johns and not also go to St. Joes. If you had full choice, I'd go Joes.

  • I delivered my son at United in August and had a good experience.  My L&D nurse was AWESOME. She was so calm and sweet and did exactly what my husband and I asked of her. No, my OB did not get to deliver him, but she stopped by the next day to check on us and honestly, the Dr. was only there the last 20 minutes so I didn't care.

I wasn't too keen on having to switch rooms either, but in the end I loved it.  After 27 hours in labor it was nice to move to a clean, fresh room. As far as the rooms go, they are quite small, but it worked out nicely because visitors didn't stay too long and we were able to get some rest.

One other benefit is that United is connected to the Children's hospital.  So, if something happens with your baby, the NICU is right there.  I have had several friends deliver at St. John's, but their babies had to be transferred to Children's Hospital and they had to stay at St. John's until they recovered a bit from delivery.

I didn't have a choice on where to go, but I wasn't unhappy with my experience at United.

  • I delivered there this past March and would NEVER go back there again!! I had a great labor nurse and everything. I ended up wth a c/c after a long labor and baby had mec. She came out fine, but I had to be transferd up to the heart floor vs postpartum beauseI have a pacemaker and so the baby was in the nursery and I was upstairs getting horrible care. I rarely saw an ob nurse up on cardiac and the cardiac nurses didn't know how to take care of me or work the breastpump!!! I finally got down to post partum and the nurses were a bunch of worthless snots!! I never got help with breastfdg and I pretty left the floor to be dischardged in tears and 8 months later I still have troublw with it!!!! Don't go there!!!
  • I just delivered my DD there last week, and I LOVED my experience!! The L&D nurses where SO amazing and were extremely supportive. I ended up having a c/s and the OB (who wasn't my original OB, but like PP said, my own OB stopped in before she left from her shift and also called the next day with a lovely conversation to check on me and about my new LO) and nurses where there to answer any and all questions, where willing to work with my birth plan and were genuinely some of the nicest people I have ever met. After sx, I got transferred to a small room like a PP said, but I had so many visitors that the postpartum nurses transferred me to a different, much larger room where I had plenty of room for visitors and my own personal comfort. The postpartum nurses where also extremely kind (except for one, and I can't expect EVERYONE to be having a good day) but otherwise I couldn't believe how nice these nurses where too. They offered anything and everything to myself, my husband and my new DD. We ended up buying them pizza and cheesecake because they were just that fantastic and did such a great job of helping me out with questions, concerns, breastfeeding and taking care of all of us in general.

I ended up going to back to the hospital this weekend due to mastitis, and before my mastitis diagnosis, the OB I talked to (who wasn't my original OB, but the same that worked with me the night of my sx) took the time out of her busy day (I was politely told that L&D was swamped that day) to talk to me about my symptoms and wanted to see me right away through postpartum department versus sending me to the ER. She was so kind and didn't seem stressed at all about squeezing me in to check me out. I am very thankful that they were able to get me in right away and again the care I received,

I will continue to RAVE about them and would be excited to go back to United when the next LO comes around.  :)
