A postpartum bleeding question...

I was just reading online around 4 days bleeding should taper off to pink, but every now and then maybe once a day I still get bright red bleeding. It'll gush for a while then taper off again... Anyone else go through the same thing or know if this is normal? TIA!

Re: A postpartum bleeding question...

  • My bleeding has never been heavy ( I used the hospital pads 1 night, then switched to Always pads and by 2 weeks out was only using panty liners) however I'll still ocasionally see some bright red on the liner---for me it tends to coincide with activity. If I've gone for a walk or something it will be red about a half hour, 45 minutes later. I was told only to worry if I pass a clot bigger than a half-dollar.

  • 4 days?  No way.  I mean, sure, for some people it could happen but I think most people bleed red for quite a bit longer than that - a week at least.

Same here. I was seeing red until about a week ago. Looking back, it was on the days that I was more active (taking walks, doing laundry, etc.). It's nothing to worry about unless you're bleeding through a pad.

  • I bled for 10 weeks and it was always a gush or bright red. I never had it be light pink or any other color.
  • I had a csection with both of my children and I bled until close to 5 weeks with both of them . It wasnt heavy the whole time but it wasnt light either .

  • I also had a c-section also. I bled pretty constantly for the first week and a half, and its just now starting to slow down. So its been about 3 weeks, and still going, just very lightly, and light pink. Everyone is different.

  • Thanks a bunch ladies! I thought it sounded a bit funky since you're supposed to have like 50% more blood and 4 days didn't sound too realistic to me to be losing that much blood. We were pretty active earlier in the day too, so that sounds like the culprit as well.
  • I'm sure it's normal.

I bled and had mucous discharge for almost 5 weeks. It would come and go until it finally stopped altogether.

  • The hospital nurse, right after giving birth, told me to expect to see blood for 4 weeks, not 4 days. That's exactly what it was, about 3-4 weeks of bright red before it tapered, and a week of heavy clotting at first. You should only be worried if you see clots bigger than golf balls! Then it bled a little bit after major activity, or sex with DH. Now I'm 11 weeks out and got my period so bleeding again!
