birth announcement and newborn photos?

I am looking into getting baby photographed soon after birth..I think most photographers recommend within a week.  Can I do that and then send the most adorable birth announcements in the mail or is that too long of a wait? (maybe 2 weeks after birth day)

  • "Too long" according to who? Doesn't sound too long to me, but I'm not always Ms. Etiquette. ;)

  • I think within a month to 6 weeks in completely normal to send announcements (though it can be done sooner, it's just you finding the time).  Im a NB photographer, tell your photographer that you are interested in announcements and they should show you their gallery (this can even be done before the baby is born) and you can pick the announcement, then after the photos are done they can put together the announcement and get it ordered in a timely manner.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
  • You might want to call your hospital and see if they have someone who comes in and takes nb photos--ours does!  We'll get a few shots of the nb and then wait a few weeks to do a photosession.  I'd like to wait a few weeks before sitting down and having the photosession.

  • This is something I've been looking into a lot this week, too!

I don't think waiting 2-4 weeks after the birth to send out birth announcements is a big deal; I think most people will understand that, hey, you're dealing with a newborn and you're tired, and I don't think anyone would ever expect same-day mailing of a birth announcement. If you were thinking of sending them a year after the birth, well, then there might be an issue with it being a little weird. ;)

  • If you get them out in two weeks congratulations rock star mom! I'm hoping to get them out in less than a month and a half!

  • I would also definitely find someone now .. you may possibly be able to invest in a first year package which could save you money as well.. I normally recommend to clients also within the first 3-10 days at the latest for nb photos.. the older the baby gets, the less likely you are to get those sleepy posed shots you are looking for..
