Baby's kicking... but feels funny? not sure what it should feel like.

Hello Everyone,

I think I can finally feel my baby kicking yaaaay!  Sometimes if feels nice and I love it.  Then other times.... it feels funny.  It feels like she is kicking straight down on my uterus or bladder and it kinda hurts.  Well "hurts" may not be the best word, but it causes me to jump because it feels funny down there especially when I am not expecting it (like at dinner time).

Just wondering is that normal?   I thought the kicks and jabs were going to be more towards my belly.   Also, what does it feel like when baby pulls on the umbilical cord?

 Thanks so much.

  • Baby's kicks and rolls can feel like anything and can be felt anywhere, they are never in the same place! Sometimes when the baby moves it feels like a lot of pressure down there, which can be uncomfortable or if they kick in the right direction it can cause shooting pains. I think what you are feeling is pretty normal!

  • Very rarely do I actually feel kicks in the middle of my belly. I've just started being able to see when she kicks, and the only thing I see in the middle is when she rolls over (it looks like a scene out of an alien movie!). Usually LO likes to use my bladder as a trampoline. Lately, I've been getting more to the extreme sides (apparently she likes to lay transverse, lets hope it doesn't become a habit!). Last night I was lying on my side & she kicked just a couple inches above my hip bone and startled me awake. I've never heard about pulling on the umbilical cord though, I'm not sure if you'd actually be able to feel that one...

I'm not sure if there is a "normal" when talking about the places babies like to kick, though!

  • My LO kicks all over the place, but I've had days where the kicks are felt pretty much right in my crotch Smile The first time I felt that it was definitely strange. I think any location is normal, it all depends on how they're positioned in there at the time when they start kicking.

  • The kicks and jabs are everywhere!!!  I get kicked in the belly, in the side, in what feels like the spine, in the bladder, I swear he kicks straight up and I can feel it in my throat.  Right now, these LO's have so much space to move around that they can pretty much kick you anywhere.

  • I felt like you the first fews times...I would jump up my chair because like you said ..I just didnt expect it! But it is the best feeling in the world. Now I need to feel him move everyday (usualy at nitgh time when Im watching TV...), it stresses my out a little when I dont so I stay still and wait for it...then I can relax and keep going on with whatever I have to do! :)

  • I've felt baby kicking or punching all over the place, but lately he or she has been kicking me in the bladder and that's a weird sensation--I've actually heard of women getting kicks to the bladder that have caused them to pee themselves.
  • I have to agree as a FTM I had no idea what to expect. At first it felt like scraping and started about 2 weeks ago. I feel the movements occasionally, and sometimes it's uncomfortable and other times it's downright painful, like stabbing my side. I hadn't heard people call it painful, most said it was uncomfortable at worst. I find it weird/painful depending on where. I have felt kicks near my cervix, but luckily none that extended to my crotch or bladder. Definitely strange.
