2nd Trimester

Sleeping and numb arms

I've noticed in the last week or so that I will wake up at night and my arms or hands are 'asleep', you know, all tingling and stuff. I've been trying to avoid sleeping on my back (my favorite position) but that doesnt seem to matter. Last night I was on my right side, woke up and my left arm was numb.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Re: Sleeping and numb arms

  • Almost every night since I've switched to sleeping on my sides.  Annoying...but Im sure its a transition.

  • I find that when I roll onto my right side that my right arm doesn't make the roll with the rest of my body and I end up sleeping on it. Then I wake up and it's so numb that it hurts.

  • yes with my last pregnancy it got so bad that i actually had to wear wrist guards to bed so that the circulation would be better through my hands and after i got used to them being on it helped tremendously.  I guess carpal tunnel is very normal during pregnancy.  I would talk to your OB about it!

  • I normally sleep on my side but i've noticed I get numb on each side each and every night...multiple times. I wonder if it happens to do with circulation since more blood is going to the baby?

  • Me too!  I try to shift around as much as I can, but I wonder if there's something else to do about it.

  • I have the same issue (actually its getting worse) and talked to my doc about it.  She says its probably water retention compressing on my carpal tunnel nerve, thus making my hands and arms numb.  Its gotten pretty bad to the point that simply driving, I have to switch hands on the steering wheel cause they go numb.  :(

She suggested wearing wrist braces at night.

  • Yes, just last night I woke up and I was lying on my left side, my whole left leg and foot were numb! Hope this was just a one time thing and wont become a common occurance.

  • I've been having the same issue.  My feet and hands "fall asleep".  I was talking to a girlfriend of mine who is 35 weeks and she said she had the same issue but they went away when she started sleeping with a pregnancy pillow.  Think it's time I invest in one...

  • I'm having this same problem! I've had it for a couple weeks. I was thinking the same thing about the pregnancy pillow. I think it's time to invest in one.

  • Yes!  I, too, like sleeping on my back, but have been trying to train myself to sleep on my side.  I don't have the pregnancy pillow yet, but i did buy a neck roll and try to be more conscious when falling asleep about keeping my arms away from my face.  It has definitely improved, though I still end up rolling over on my back at some point.
