Need pregnany pillow recs

So last night I reached that "magic hour" where I can no longer sleep on my back comfortably (I'm 14 weeks 1 day).  I'm usually a side sleeper, but sometimes I wake up on my back unintentionally.  Also, I've been having hip pain, which seems to worsen when sleeping on one side, so I would sometimes end up tossing and turning so much from that symptom that I would wind up on my back out of desperation!

The only thing that has made me hesitate to try a pregnancy pillows is that I've read some reviews online, and some of them have said that the pillows were designed for shorter women and taller women (seemed to be 5'8" or over) had trouble with them.  Could you please help me out with some pros/cons of your pregnancy pillow?  FYI I'm 5'8".  Thanks!   :)

Re: Need pregnany pillow recs

  • I LOVE my Mom pillow :) I had it last pregnancy, and i just busted it out a few weeks ago cause I'm also having pains on my hips from the pressure of sleeping on my side... I have this one (website directly below):

I'm also almost 5'10", so I'm also a tall girl... And for added comfort i also like to line up pillows UNDER me (so my hips can rest on the pillows beneath), and then i can wrap my legs around the Mom pillow :) I sleep like a baby... highly recommended!

  • I bought the pregnancy pillow by Boppy at Motherhood. I love it. It has a thin section in the middle which makes it mad flexible for your needs. Some nights I just use one of the puffy sides... sometimes I have it wrapped around me with one end between my legs. It's very pliable. So whatever I need it becomes. I love it. I haven't heard anything about height effecting  the pillow use, but then again I'm 5'3'' so I guess it wouldn't matter for me.

  • I bought a Snoogle on sale at Target almost 2 months ago.  I only bought it so early because it was $20 off.  I didn't start using it immediately - I started off sleeping with a thin pillow between my knees which helped me sleep on my side, which I heard it better for circulation & the baby.  Now that I'm further along I started using the Snoogle.  It's like a letter "C" and cradles your head, can go in front or behind you, and then between your legs.  I use it behind my back so I don't roll over at night.  I'm 5'6".  Since I've started actually using it I find that I can sleep through the night. I only wake up if I have to pee.  I like to sleep with the blankets on, and I have two dogs that always want to be pressed up against either me or my husband, so I find that it gets a little hot with the body pillow.  I just stick my legs out of my blankets and I feel better.  Also, since I'm sleeping on my left side I've noticed that my left hand is getting numb since I sleep with it under the pillow.  I heard this is common & don't think it's a problem specific to the Snoogle pillow.

On the downside: It is bulky, and I feel like it's a barrier between me & my husband.  We have a king sized bed, and if not I don't know how we'd fit in bed with this pillow.

  • Snoogle = gift from god!  Best thing ever, I slept SO well up until week 40 with DS while my other pregnant friends weren't sleeping a wink with other pillows!

  • I just got a body pillow. Much cheaper  than the Boppy version and works the same.

  • I'm 5'10" and a side sleeper. I have slept with my Boppy maternity pillow for 2 years straight. I cannot go a night without it. It works great for me!

  • I like having my head pillow separate from the body pillow so I went for the Snoozer. It's super comfy and I've slept really well since getting it. It's shaped like a J and I have the hooked part down by my feet so I can continue to use my head pillow. I was disappointed when I realized most of the pregnancy pillows were designed to be used as a head pillow, so I got really excited when I found this one at Destination Maternity. Here it is on Amazon: Snoozer Full Body Pillow

  • I got a Snoogle yesterday and OMG... the PP who said it's a gift from god is 1000% right. I thought I wouldn't like having the full size one and that I'd want my normal head pillow but I got it anyway. I had a 20% off coupon for BRU. I slept SO GREAT last night. It was amazing. I slept with the pillow against my tummy but did have it against my back once or twice as well. I did not want to get up this morning.

Edit: I'm 5'2 and it's bigger than I am, but still surprisingly easy to "mold" to my body.

  • I feel so-so about my Snoodle.  I find it's not that comfortable around my neck.  It doesn't sit well between my knees / legs, the fabric is stiff and scratchy and if you toss and turn you won't be able to reposition it easily.   That being said, you are taller than  me so you might not have the leg issue.

If I could do it all over again I'm not sure I would have bought the big snoodle but rather the smaller version.

  • I'm using a regular body pillow (make sure it's going between your knees AND your ankles, if you're still having trouble!), my usual head pillow, and a Boppy wedge for under my belly.

It's kind of annoying having so many different things to keep track of, but it's a super-flexible system for me, so if I want to roll over/move around/whatever I can. :) And I can still snuggle up with DH at night, which is a major bonus!

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! Jillibean, do you line up pillows directly underneath you?  Like, under your butt?

  • I haven't bought a pregnancy pillow and don't plan on it.  I just use a regular pillow right now - I like to curl up a bit when I sleep so a queen size pillow is just long enough to tuck between my knees and also support my top arm.  This past weekend, we stayed with family and I got to use a king size pillow as my snuggler for the first time. It's longer, and I think I like it better so that I don't have to be as curled up. I may invest in one!

I can't justify buying an expensive pillow just for when I'm pregnant. Where would I put it in 4 months?  I'll keep using things I already have, call me cheap :)

  • Leachco All Nighter Body Pillow.  It is big, but it supports your neck, stomah, back, and can go in between your legs.  I LOVE it!
