HEARTBURN ATTACKS!

So I didnt eat anything out of the ordinary yesterday, pretty normal things I always eat, nothing spicy at all more than pepper.

HOWEVER at 11:00 last night I woke up to this burnign sensation down my throat and chest to my stomach...it was on fire. It was worse when I laid down and felt as though I needed to throw up at times, just dry heaves which also burned.

I have never had heartburn but this sounds like that is what it was. I was up until 1am, when DH woke up and asked if I was okay, I told him about the heartburn and he went to the store and bought me some TUMS. I took 2 and went to sleep. DH to the rescue, I may not send him for cravings but TUMS i will send him for!

This morning I ate breakfast ( bagel with cream cheese,  a banana and chocolate milk same as every morning) and it is back. Not sure how to prevent or help it, any suggestions

Re: HEARTBURN ATTACKS!

  • I hadn't had it in MONTHS(and I get it all the time bc of gallbladder), and it strarted up for me two days ago;0(  I SO did not miss it.  Wheat and bananas and red sauces KILL ME.  So, your bagel and banana would make me want to die.  Make sure you don't eat Right before bed.  And laying on your left side ad some elevation help a lot.  Other than that, ask your doc.  I stick to Tums;0(  Sometimes water helps me....

  • I also get it pretty bad but I have not been able to figure out what does it to me. Sometimes I can eat red sauce and be completely fine other times it's horrible. I just eat what I want now and if I get heartburn I just take my tums. I carry them everywhere.

  • I have been struggling with acid reflux (for me it's not heartburn - I'm in the "lucky" 10% of people that experience it as nausea instead of pain) for about 10 years (runs in my family) and can usually control it with diet (for me the main trigger is too much white flour and/or not enough veggies) but the further I get into this pregnancy the more out-of-control it gets, even though I'm on Zantac (OTC med) twice a day as per doctor's orders. A few tips: try eating smaller meals spaced out by at least a couple of hours, and do not drink liquids too close to meals, especially afterwards when your stomach is full. Eat as much veggies as you can - most vegetables (including tomato, believe it or not - for those of you having trouble with red sauces it may have more to do with the spices or whatever you eat it with, like pasta) are alkaline foods which means they neutralize stomach acid. Almonds are also a great alkaline food. Try eating the nuts themselves or substituting almond milk instead of cow's milk. Cow's milk helps with acid reflux temporarily because of the calcium, but it will just come back (sometimes worse).

  • Ugh.  I know the feeling.   I have never had heartburn until becoming pregnant, so I didn't really know what to expect.  I got it for the first time like a month ago, but only had it a few days and went a way.  Now it's back and terrible.  I had some spicy chili the other day, which was my own fault, but since then have been watching the spicy stuff.  I am still getting it!  Tums are my best friend right now and I have them next to the bed.  I noticed it's worse when I lay down too, so I try to prop myself up a little.   If I keep having it for the 17 weeks that are left or so, I will go crazy!

  • I think some people are just more prone to it unfortunately. :(

I find that taking a Tums or 2 before it gets really bad helps more than waiting it out.

They also say that your saliva is a good neutralizer, so chewing gum after meals helps stimulate saliva production.

  • I get hearburn almost everyday.  They say the baby will have lots of hair.  My cousin, who is on her fourth child, said to try Aloe Juice.  It is all natural. And that you only need like a teaspoon to help it.  I haven't made to the store to try it yet.  But Tums have been my friend for a month now.

  • Mine can be MISERABLE...burning, burning, burning, dry heaving...nasty. I finally asked my dr about it, and they told me to get Zantac. Now, after a few weeks of taking it, I don't hardly have to take it anymore..I just keep it around just in case. I also avoid ALL trigger foods. Literally haven't had a tomato or tomato product in weeks. And I love tomatoes, so this is very sad for me. :(

Tums can help, but I find the chalky texture disgusting...it always makes me gag.
