Aspirin for headaches during stims

Greetings from IVF#1 land! Here I am again with another question. Of course I always seem to have these questions on weekends when the boards are fairly quiet!

I get a lot of headaches and the Lupron and stims I am on just add to that natural occurence. I really wanted to go all natural on this stim cycle but today's headache is just so bad (like I can barely keep my eyes open) that I caved in and took Excedrin, which is the only thing that works for me. Is this bad? Tonight will be my second night of stims and I keep feeling like I just ruined everything.

Me: 31, Dx: Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, Elevated AMH of 18 DH: 34 & borderline morphology issues IUI#1/cycle with Menopur & Novarel = Mild OHSS & BFN IUI#2/cycle with Menopur & Novarel = BFN IVF#1 converted to FET due to moderate OHSS 21 eggs retrieved, 12 mature, 11 fertilized 7 frosties, 6 genetically normal December 5th FET with one perfect blast = BFN FET #2 = early February

Re: Aspirin for headaches during stims

  • Hi! I was on Menopur and gonal-f, and I am a frequent migraine/headache sufferer. When my headaches got really bad on the stims, I was instructed Tylenol only...I don't think you ruined anything, but I would call your nurse and see what exactly you can take! I also took a nap when my headaches got bad and that seemed to relax me. Good luck and feel better! :)

  • I'm sorry you are having such bad headaches.  I did too and it sucked.  My RE told me I could take extra strength Tylenol for my headaches.  The only thing they specifically advised me not to take was ibuprofen once I started the stims because it can effect your lining.  I'd double check with your RE just to be sure so you don't have to worry.

I hope you feel better and good luck!

Lupron is nasty for headaches!! Good luck!!!

  • I was told Tylenol was the only OTC medication I could take while stimming, without speaking to a nurse first.

  • Oh man. As if the hormones aren't making me crazy enough, now I am sitting here feeling HORRIBLE for taking the Excedrin. Cr@p. I hate how this information isn't even available. Why can't they just give me a list of things to do and things not to do so I don't have to sit here and climb the walls blaming myself for sabataging my cycle!

  • Don't feel bad! Im sure you didn't ruin anything! Is there a nurse/emergency line to call? Maybe you would feel better talking with someone from your RE office? I hope you feel better!
  • Don't take any more excedrin because it has aspirin in it. I was beyond miserable last weekend when I had started taking lupron. I added in stims on Saturday night.  I think what happens is that lupron tanks your E2 level, causing the massive headaches.  As your follies grow, your E2 goes up and the headaches will subside.  I asked last weekend if I could take excedrin and my RE told me no.  It wasn't fun.  I alternated between having my head on the heating pad and ice packs.  For me, the headache started Saturday morning. I started stims that night and I had the massive headache on Sunday as well. When I work up Monday morning, it was gone. I hope you feel better soon because I know how horrible it felt.

Exactly! I was never told not to but I was never told that it was ok either so that got me thinking.

  • I was and still am battling a sinus infection (I was on stims last week and just went through my ER yesterday).  I was told only Tylenol but was so miserable that I caved and took Advil cold and sinus (the only thing that works for me).  My RE office said that was okay, as long as I stopped taking my baby asprin.

I saw that too! It made me feel A TINY bit better. I'm going to run this by my doc on Monday too when I have my first follie check. In the meantime, I'm staying away from everything "bad" just so I don't drive myself insane.

I doubt that one time while stimming would ruin everything with an over the counter med.

Aspirin is a mild blood thinner- that's why some girls (myself included) are put on it during IVF. If you are already thin blooded- taking extra can make you bleed or bruise more with injections. My shots were a little more exciting after I went on baby dose aspirin (I bleed a little more freely since starting the daily dose- I had no bruises before but I had a couple of big ones after). Unless you have a clotting problem the docs aren't going to want you taking aspirin within a day or so of retrieval- it may increase bleeding and bruising.

The general conclusion is avoid anything unknown during an IVF cycle- but the one time should be fine. I've never heard of someone needing to be cancelled because they took an over the counter medication. :)

I banished everything but approved meds from the medicine cabinet after the third or fourth time I grabbed for sudafed while stimming. Put the rest under the sink so I wouldn't forget and grab something I usually take. It's been hard for me to remember to switch from ibuprofen to tylenol (since DH won't take tylenol we didn't even have any in the house for years) but with a couple of new meds- I'm off ibuprofen even when not cycling. It's an adjustment!

  • If you are not doing so already, try acupuncture!  It does wonders for my headaches and overall stress relief. Good luck!
