Cloth Diapering

Prefold question, and NB stash question

Ok, so totally new to CDing  and everything I have read is starting to mush together.

I am slowly starting to get my stash, and so far I have 27 prefolds, 4 NB BG AIOs, and 4 NB covers. I also have 10 reusable Bummis fleece liners.

How many more covers should I get? Do I have enough prefolds if I wash every two days? I am going to try to use the NB AIOs if we go somewhere, so I'm hoping to use prefolds for daily use.

In regards to prefolds, can I use them as baby gets older, as long as covers fit? I have a dozen 4x6x4 infant prefolds. How long will these typically last? Then can I use them as extra soakers? Burp cloths? Then I have 15 2x8x4 prefolds.

I appreciate any help, and I know how annoying answering these questions must get every day, but I don't know anyone that CDs and there aren't any retailers where I live.

Re: Prefold question, and NB stash question

  • I would get another dozen prefolds. We had 48, which was too many, but I think 27 will not be enough. At that stage they poo every 10 seconds.

  • I agree about getting another dozen, but I'd get some 4x8x4. Even as a newborn my dd soaked a 4x6x4 very quickly.

  • I'd get at least 2-3 more covers... my baby hasn't gotten here yet, but my friend had her little guy this summer and apparently her son wet through prefolds very quickly so the covers were always wet & poo-ed on w/each change.

She claimed it wasn't as easy as wiping them out and letting them dry between changes, that they pretty much needed to be washed when she used prefolds... she said it wasn't as much of an issue if she used fitteds more but she stuck w/prefolds most of the time.

Fitteds might be a good option to help stretch your cover usage because the elastic would contain poo more.

Again, no newborn experience [yet] just relaying my friend's experience!

  • I agree, another 10-12 prefolds (or fitteds if you want a variety) and more covers unless you are a real minimalist.  That should allow for every 2 day washing with a little buffer to get the diapers put away on the morning of day 3.

How many covers is going to depend on your taste and how you use your prefolds.

I have a friend who buys only 2 covers in a given size.  They use the correct size and the next size up (giving them 4 in rotation at any one time) and find it works for them.  I think they hand wash if absolutely needed.

We have more like a dozen PUL covers plus some emergency fleece and wool (divided between three changing stations and the diaper bag, so it's hard to count) and because we just trifold the prefolds rather than snappi-ing (lazy but it works) we go through them fairly quickly.

  • We used a bikini twist fold for the NB stage, so we rarely had problems with poo getting on covers.  5 covers would have worked fine for us.  I'd say that 36 prefolds would be great for every other day washing.  I loved prefolds!  I used AIOs for going out until I realized they were way more prone to leaking than a bikini twisted prefold and a Thirsties cover.

  • ditto PP on the bikini twist. we got by with 24 PFs and 6 covers, and washed every 2 days or so.
