Babies on the Brain

Rec your sleep training books

I am most likely going to have to do some sort of sleep training.  DS who was sttn at 2 months now wakes up 4+ times a night.  (Right now though part of it is probably teething.)  He doesn't even eat at the wake ups 90% of the time.  He just fusses until I either put him in his swing, rock/pat hold him for 30+ mins, or sometimes just give him his paci back and his lovey frog.

So needless to say it is a good idea I invested in a ton of pacis and a swing that plugs in instead of using batteries.

I am not against cry it out as long as it involves going in at intervals to check/ comfort him.  So any book recs?  This momma is super tired.

  • We did Ferber, but not until he was 7-8 months old.  He was sleeping fine until then, anyways.  It worked like a charm, though.

  • Everything you just described is totally normal sleep behavior for a LO his age. I know it's hard and get tiring though! I highly suggest reading the No Cry Sleep Solution. It's a book filled with great ideas and doesn't involve "training" so much as suggestions to help meet your individual child and family's needs. GL.

  • You mentioned his lovey frog - does your baby like to snuggle with something to calm down or fall asleep?

DS went through the same thing around that time and the way we got over it was to put a soft blanket on him at night.  I was hesitant because I thought maybe it was too early, but he could hold his head up well enough and roll over so I gave it a try (and checked on him a zillion times throughout the night for weeks!).  He really likes to snuggle and I think the blanket is just easier for him to find in the night than his little lovey.

Part of the problem is even with the frog that he wants his face covered while he sleeps.  (Just like his father lol)  I always go and uncover his face.  If I left it covered sadly he would problably sleep great.

I might try a super soft blanket for naptimes to see if helps.it

  • I was afraid that Logan was going to cover his face because for a long time when he was younger (feels so weird saying that since he's still very young!) he was like a bird - if you threw a blanket over him he quieted right down and fell asleep.  So at first I started with a crocheted blanket that I had which has wide spaces in it so that if he put it over his head I'd feel better that he could still breathe well enough.  But he pulls the blanket up near his chin, sometimes covering his ears, and just starts rubbing it between his fingers.  So then we switched to a nicer, softer blanket.

  • I really liked Ferber's book. I wouldn't start sleep training until you've actually read it. Personally, I didn't feel comfortable letting #1 cry at all until I'd read it and understood why I was doing what I was doing.

All that being said, we didn't sleep train until about 10 months or so, because we really didn't need to until then.

I think I am going to get the book.  I don't plan on starting it until he is past six months.  I know his teeth are bothering him right now.  I do think I am going to attempt to break him of his swing now.  It used to be that I put him in it half way through the night because he would sleep the rest of the night without waking.  But now he still wakes every 1-2 hours.  So I might as well break that bad habit now if I am going to be losing a ton of sleep anyway.
