Gyno Appointment - Am I Over Reacting?

I over react so well, so I thought I'd ask the experts :)  This was setting up being a new patient, pap, all that happy stuff visit.

I said I felt confident that I was ovulating.  She asked how I knew and what my cycles were like.  I said always 28 day, with a 12 day LP.  She was like, a what, and how do you know?  So I handed her my charts.  She glanced at them and said that just because a thermometer shows a change doesn't mean anything.  I was like, um, I know, but you asked, so I'm telling you.  Plus I get positive OPK's [those don't mean anything she says] and I have O pain.  She said the only way to know is to do the CD21 progesterone level, which today is day 21.  I asked about CD3 work and she got a blank look.  She said I can do it tomorrow [the CD21] because she is ordering other tests as well, not fert related, health related.
She asked why I was taking vitamin e.  I said because I read it can help with CM.  She said she hadn't heard that and I probably wasn't getting any more CM.  Um, I am, trust me on this one.  I know my own body somewhat well.  I asked about acupuncture, she said that she'd never heard of it for fertility.  And "why would you want to put needles in your husbands penis"  I was like, ermmm... you don't put them in the penis, or anywhere near his boys.
Then she told me about IVF, nothing IUI at all, and I didn't even say anything, although I've had 2 friends go through it, I just kept my mouth shut.  She mentioned an HSG and I said that I wanted to do one if my bloodwork comes back normal.  For the low price of $1,200 I can do that.  Super.  I asked if any of these tests can be coded for non IF relation.  She was like, I'm not gonna lie on your charts.  I didn't say lie, I'm trying to save money, excuse me!  She also said that right after an HSG, you are more likely to conceive because everything is clear.  Any idea if that's true?
And she ordered another S/A, so we are doing that on 10/28 "because sperm aren't reborn every 3 months, it's like every 1 1/2"  She did ask what Brett's working conditions are like and he does work in an hot environment for 12 hours a day.  That might explain the motility, I'll give her that one.  She said that putting the sample between my boobs "probably cooked them"  Well clearly the count was alright, they just aren't active.  Even the lab lady, who said that the sperm do indeed spawn [haha, spawn] every 3 months said the boobs is perfect because it's body temp.  Lab lady was also surprised that I'm coming back in so quick, but she said she'd do any test I wanted.  Not to mention I asked a good friend who kept her husbands sample there herself.  Anyways, she mentioned a varicocele, and that has been one of my questions for a long time, and when she was describing it, Brett agreed that it sounds like he may have one.  We see the uro on 12/16.
So am I over reacting that I'm not impressed?  At all?  Her office staff is awesome, the nurse isn't to bad, but her.  I'm totally not impressed, but given the fact I live in the sticks, I don't have much of an option for local.  My hope/thought is do all of our testing here and then whisk off to the RE... Sorry for the novel!!!  Thanks for reading and giving any input :)

  • besides her seeming extremely uneducated about charting, acupuncture, supplements, etc. the way she pooh-poohed you is probably the worst part IMO.

Do you know anyone locally that can recommend a good doc?  Or can you move on to an RE?  My PCP who I LOVE actually recommended my doctor (they are in the same family practice) as he helped her get pregnant and delivered her kids.  A friend also had a great experience with him so I decided to give him a shot and I love him.

  • Run..not walk to an RE..I think most ladys on this board know 100% MORE than she does and she is the on with a medical degree...right? My DH had low motility..they tried to say could be from heat..wnt back 3 months..still same issue and he wasn't really over heated...Good Luck with your up coming appts!

  • I don't.  Everyone I know goes to a PCP and my doctor is a family doctor who doesn't do OB anymore for health reasons, so she sent me to this wacko.  The RE is 1 1/2 hours away and I know someone who had luck with an IUI from them, and I know everyone is different, but it's nice knowing it worked on someone I know, you know what I mean?  My hope is to get the blood work done here and she said that Salt Lake might be cheaper for the HSG, get that done and then go from there.  I hope the uro is smarter than her...

Do you think the SA will have made that much of a change in not even a month?  First one was 9/30, then it'll be 10/28.

  • If you are not impressed, get a new doctor.  I think the waiting part gets me because she didn't seem very educated, or at least open to your ideas.  Maybe try to get some referrals through friends, family, etc.  That is what I did and I was very happy!

ETA: Just read your last post. I drive an hour to see my doctor, so I say take the drive.  Some of them are just worth it to me!

  • I've heard the heat can be bad, so that did make some sense.  And I have to wonder about the varicocele too.  That one makes the most sense, by reading about it online and how it feels and such.  If it were you, would you do the SA?  Or wait until 12/16 for the uro?

The only thing she said that had merit was that clearing the tubes with the HSG sometimes leads to pregnancy.

You really really really really need to never see her again. Run for it!

  • Yikes!  Time to look for another doctor, ASAP.  Even if it's a drive, getting accurate medical information is worth it.  GL!

Also:  I've heard of anecdotal evidence of higher pregnancy rates after the HSG, but this would only boost your chances if the issue was a blockage that was able to be cleared with this procedure.  This obviously won't help at all if the issue is with a different part of your reproductive system and/or YH.  But this procedure should be done before moving forward with ART.

  • I do for sure want the HSG, MH and I talked tonight, wondering if it'd be worth the drive to go to Salt Lake for it, she said it'd be cheaper there since they have places not affiliated with the hospitals.  I have talked to the RE's office earlier in the week and they are 4 weeks out, and I'm going to talk to my husband and see what he thinks.  I'd like to find out my CD21 work and go from there.  I'm just glad I wasn't over reacting!

  • This only further proves that OBs know NOTHING about GETTING a woman pregnant.  Go to the RE.  Yes, the drive may stink, but at least you'll be with someone who knows WTH they are talking about.

On a side note, I agree with your doctor about not and coding things differently.  WHile I totally get trying to save money, you were asking her to lie.

  • Honestly, this sounds like typical OB that seems to know nothing about fertility.  Mine didn't want to listen to me about charting and opk's either.

I knew I needed to see someone so I went to see an RE and it's been soooo much better!

I would definitely say to dump your OB.  Good luck! ((hugs))

  • Like the other ladies said, it's time to move onto a RE.  But just as a side note, both of my Dr's, OB & RE, wouldn't look at my charts either.  Kind of sounds like your Dr hasn't even heard of the whole concept though.  It just goes to show that an OBs expertise is not getting you pregnant.  Good luck!
