Here is what I don't get. Why people name their child one thing and then call him or her something completely different. "This is our son Samuel David, but we call him Joey". ?????? If you are going to call him Joey, then name him Joseph for crying out loud.

Re: s/o nicknames
Yep. I can see nicknames as options, Like Sam or Sammy for Samuel or Jay or Jace for Jason but Bill for Lowell? huh?
I never got the we are going to call him by his middle name or a totally different name altogether thing. I am sure as a kid it must be confusing too.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

ITA! My friend has named all of her children and then called them all by their middle name. Why not just use that as their first name?
True story - my cousin named her son Charles William G___, III. They called him Trey. So, he goes to first grade and the teacher is calling roll on the first day. Charles? Charlie? Chuck? No answer. Finally they figured out that his given name was Charles and he went by Trey. So, what did my cousin do? She LEGALLY changed his name to Trey. So, now he's Trey Charles G___. Crazy.
Unexplained Infertility

TTC #2
After months of being postponed or cancelled, FET #1.3 (Natural FET) brought us twin girls!

My CW's name is William and he goes by Tre. He's the third though, so that's why.
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
My BIL is Trae also. His given name is a family name, but he's a third also. I know a couple Quinn's and Quint's. They're the 5th in the family line for that name.
This is really common where I'm from.
My brother is Andrew Scott K_____, Jr. and has been called Scott from the minute he was born. The reason, my Mom loves my Dad's name but did not want my brother called "Little Andy" his whole life.
my grandmother names is Kathleen, I did not know this until I was older though. I have never heard anyone call her this unless we were at doctor's appointments. She went by Helen by our family, which was not her middle name either. Apparently she looked just like her Aunt Helen who died who died shortly after my grandmother's 2nd birthday. Later as she got older her nephews called her Heinz because she always took her sweet time getting any where so they said she was like Heinz 57 glass kethcup bottles. When my grandmother go remarried when I was small her new husband called her Katherine. Fast forward to when she died, the priest was talking about her she said Kathleen and 90% of the room had NO idea that was her actual name.
It really was confusing add to the fact she had TWO last names which both were rather common and even her maiden name was very common too!
